Wilbur Ware Institute, Inc. Founded in 1980 after the death of Wilbur Ware, we became a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization in 1983.

We will establish a Saturday Jazz Exposure Program that focuses on the history or jazz, workshops and seminars, as well as hands-on experience with and performance by jazz masters. Students will be chosen from elementary, middle and high schools.

JB was remembered at the Pappy Martin Legacy Masten Jazz Festival in Buffalo. Held on the last two Sundays in July. This was billed as a "Powerful Homage to Jazz Bassists in the spirit of our founder, Pappy Martin." On July 26, 2021, there were performances by the faculty band and students from the Love Supreme School of Music, Nat Reeves, Curtis Lundy and UMOJA, as well as Ron Carter Trio.

We sadly are learning of the passing of another jazz legend with roots in Buffalo. The legendary bassist Juini Booth has died at the age of 73 after apparent health struggles. Booth's legendary status in jazz dates back to his 1960s dates with Eddie Harris and Art Blakely. Also performing with Gary Bartz, Freddy Hubbard, and Shelly Manne. In the mid-1970s, Booth was an integral part of McCoy Tyner's recordings and performances. In his later years, Booth returned to Buffalo more frequently and engaged in performing in the free jazz movement. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. (photo by Jack Zuff)

There is much more Black cultural destruction that goes unacknowledged by white supremacist systematic/systemic oppression. We are thus in a position where even we are ignorant of it or most often uninformed about our genius hidden in plain sight.

Tulsa may have been the worst of the early-20th-century race riots, but it was part of a familiar pattern.

This essay on Billie Holliday is outstanding. It's well worth reading and digesting. There are exceptional black women, well-known and unknown, throughout America and world-wide whose lives are valued and simultaneously misunderstood by all who necessarily survive and view life through a white-supremacist prism.

Before the tragedies of Britney Spears or Whitney Houston, there was Billie Holiday. There’s a cruel blueprint to the way American society treats many of its mo…

Wilmer Jennings Gallery at Kenkeleba 219 E. Second Street, NYC, must be mentioned. How can we teach our youth about Black fine art and the genius and mastery of music (now globally called Jazz), America's indigenous musical creation?

This list serves as Artsy Editorial’s ongoing resource for art lovers to learn more about and support Black-owned galleries across the United States.
