This season, the music of Luther Vandross takes center stage at New York City Center. In collaboration with the Luther Vandross Estate and Primary Wave, choreographer Jamar Roberts brings ‘Power of Love’ to the stage—a new ballet celebrating one of the most influential voices in R&B history.

For Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater dancer Jesse Obremski, rehearsing Judith Jamison’s 'Hymn' meant stepping into a role first performed by Masazumi Chaya and learning directly from him.

A full-circle moment for Jesse, who grew up seeing Chaya’s photo on the walls of The Ailey School and now has the opportunity to learn his role alongside him. He reflects on lineage, representation, and the importance of preserving the history behind the work.

Judith Jamison's ‘Hymn' is more than a ballet—it's a tribute to the man who changed dance forever: Alvin Ailey. As rehearsals begin, we're reminded of Mr. Ailey's enduring words:

"The most unique thing in the world is you. If you can take these steps and show us yourself through it, then that will be an extraordinary experience for the audience. I believe that dance came from the people, and that it should always be delivered back to the people."
