Reverend Dr. Norvel Goff Sr. offers a simple test for leadership.

If you walked onto a plane and saw your sister sitting in the pilot seat — you might love her. You might trust her heart. You might know she means well.

But if she hasn't been trained to fly that plane, you wave from the tarmac.

Because love does not fly the plane.

Training does.

Reverend Dr. Norvel Goff didn't start in a church in Charleston.

He started in Georgetown, South Carolina.

And somewhere between there and the night of June 17, 2015, he became the kind of man a community calls when history needs someone to hold the line.

This is that story.

On June 17, 2015, thirty minutes before a gunman entered Mother Emanuel A.M.E. Church and murdered nine people during Bible study, Reverend Dr. Norvel Goff and his wife had just left for another meeting.

He was the Presiding Elder who would help lead Mother Emanuel through the days that followed.

Then came the call.

What was meant to ignite a race war became something else: a record of faith, grief, survival, and witness.

He failed.

Ten years after the massacre, and in the wake of Juneteenth, IBI founder Dario Calmese sits down with Dr. Goff as he returns to the historic record in his own words.

When Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. declared “I Have a Dream” during the 1963 March on Washington, he was not merely invoking inspiration, but declaring Black Imagination as a technology of becoming, of navigation, and of liberation.

Science has shown the restorative and healing powers unlocked during the dream state, yet dreams also provide access to a reality that exists beyond space and time; a reality beyond the laws of the universe.

At the Institute of Black Imagination, we recognize that Blackness is not a genre. It’s an operating system. That imagination isn’t ethereal, but civic architecture.

What happens when we recognize Black Imagination itself as a system-level technology for making better worlds?
