The UN wants to hear from Black gay men.

The UN Independent Expert on protection against violence and discrimination based on s*xual orientation and gender identity is seeking input on the treatment of LGBTQI+ people in police custody, prisons and detention.

GBGMC is pulling together a submission that centers Black gay men.
If you have information on profiling, arrest, violence, extortion, discrimination, or access to HIV care and legal support, send it to us by 10 November.

For the past two days, GBGMC has been representing Black gay men and other gay men in an important global conversation about the future of UNAIDS — the United Nations programme created to coordinate the global response to HIV.

Our Executive Director, Micheal Ighodaro, has been part of the discussions, asking some difficult but necessary questions.

UNAIDS is considering major changes to how it works, including potentially shifting more responsibility to other UN agencies. But our question is simple: will those changes actually work for the communities most affected by HIV?

Gay and bis*xual men, trans people, s*x workers, people who use drugs and other communities disproportionately affected by HIV are often the first to lose services when funding disappears or governments become hostile.

And communities are no longer simply people the UN should “consult.” We conduct research. We help shape access to new HIV medicines. We generate data. We deliver programmes. We know what is happening on the ground because we are doing the work.

Yet we still do not have the same power in deciding how the global HIV response is shaped.

As Micheal told the consultation:

“We’re not here to defend any institution. We’re here to make sure what comes next reaches the people this response exists for.”

And that is the question at the heart of GBGMC’s participation: whatever the future of UNAIDS looks like, will communities have more power — or less?

Long-acting PrEP can expand prevention choice. But new tools will not reach the people most affected by HIV if key-population services, funding and data are allowed to disappear.

GBGMC’s research gives advocates, donors and policymakers a shared evidence base: forecast the need, fund equitable delivery, protect community-led services, and make key populations visible in every agreement and dashboard.

A look back at GBGMC’s Institute at , Beyond Approval: From Advocacy to Implementation.

Facilitated by our Executive Director, Micheal Ighodaro Micheal Ighodaro , the Institute convened advocates and community leaders to examine one of the most important questions facing HIV prevention today: how do we ensure that innovation and approval translate into meaningful access for the communities that need it most?

Drawing on lessons from PrEP Power and community-led advocacy, the conversation explored what it takes to move from policy to practice—and why communities must help shape every stage, from design and advocacy to rollout and implementation.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, challenged our thinking and contributed their experience to the conversation.

It was all laughter, reflection and a little bit of drama as participants took on a creative challenge: performing sketches that brought to life how stigma and discrimination can show up in our everyday lives.

Through the Equal PrEP Project, GBGMC, with support from the Elton John AIDS Foundation, brought together civil society leaders, government representatives and community advocates for a capacity-strengthening workshop focused on advancing equitable access to HIV prevention for key populations.

Beyond the sessions, the convening created space to share experiences, strengthen collaboration and reflect on what it will take to ensure communities can access HIV prevention options that respond to their realities and needs.

Together, we’re building stronger, more inclusive and community-centred approaches to HIV prevention in Zambia and Eswatini.
