Here’s the question we’re asking at CSocD64:

Who’s actually at the table when social policies are written?

Because communities already know what works. They practice solidarity and resilience every day. The challenge? Making sure their wisdom shapes the policies meant to serve them.

That’s why SHRG is bringing Sikh-inspired models of care, youth-led solutions, Seva and Langar to the UN stage. True partnership, not performative inclusion.

Ever wondered what happens at a UN Commission meeting?

Next week, we’re attending CSocD64—the Commission for Social Development—in New York!

This isn’t just another conference. It’s where governments, NGOs, and communities come together to tackle poverty, inequality, and exclusion.

We’re proving that Sikh principles of service and community care aren’t just values—they’re blueprints for social justice.

Background Re: Dream Workshop NGO

The NGO “Dream Workshop” has been working since 2015 in Ukraine to create a unique ecosystem of community-based services for individuals with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

Dream Workshop embodies the idea of building an inclusive society in Ukraine where everyone, regardless of their personal characteristics, feels accepted and socialised and has the opportunity to develop their potential.

The Dream Workshop has four main areas of work:

(1) Day centres;

(2) Supported living houses;

(3) Supporting families; and

(4) Work with society.

The Dream Workshop were the first in Ukraine to support transferring people living in psychiatric hospitals to community-based services, and remains one of the few service providers in this field that works with the closed internats and other institutions.

Background Re: Djerela

Djerela is a charitable non-profit organisation (NGO) founded by parents of families with individuals with intellectual disabilities in 1994. Today, Djerela directly assists more than 150 people with intellectual disabilities and their families within Kyiv and the Kyiv region (a day centre in Kyiv and a rehabilitation centre in the village of Bohuslav, 120 km from Kyiv and the persistent air raids).

Djerela receives limited and insufficient support from the Ukrainian government and municipal organisations (remember, Ukraine is not a welfare state), and therefore Djerela is heavily reliant upon foreign aid and domestic volunteers.

Djerela was founded in 1993 as a project of the Ukrainian Psychiatry Association, and was officially registered in 1996 with the support of the Geneva Initiative on Psychiatry. Djerela unites approximately 150 families from the city of Kyiv who take care of their family member or members with intellectual disabilities.

Djerela’s overarching objective is to unite the efforts of parents and professionals for the development and fulfilment of separate actions, projects and programs that are specifically targeted at the protection of human rights, rehabilitation and social adaptation of people with intellectual disabilities and their families; and the formation of positive public opinion on the equal rights of people with disabilities.
