Men aren't told they need support.

They're told to handle it, figure it out, push through, keep moving.

But a lot of the challenges we see don't get better when they're ignored.

This summer, we're creating space for those conversations because men deserve support and community, too.

This group is called 'He Steps Up' and follows a similar format as our 'She Steps Up' program.

People don't call us on their best day.

We get the call when a notice came in the mail, a benefit expired, or a recertification got missed.

By the time they get here, they're often trying to untangle three or four things at once.

That's why the work isn't just about housing. And it can't just be about mental health.

The two are directly connected.

And we see it every day here in the South Bronx.

When people hear "housing stability," they often think it means helping someone find an apartment.

Sometimes it does, but a lot of the work happens long before that.

It's helping someone complete a recertification so they don't lose their benefits. It's helping an older adult navigate an online system they've never used before. It's helping someone organize paperwork that's been sitting in a pile because they didn't know where to start.

It's also helping someone make a phone call they've been avoiding for months.

A housing crisis rarely starts with one big thing.

Usually, it's a lot of small things that were left unresolved for too long.

That's where a lot of our work begins.

Our interns aren’t sitting quietly in the background.

They’re helping lead She Steps Up. They’re part of conversations with women working through real challenges. They’re learning what community care actually looks like while building clinical skills alongside the people they’re supporting.

And that matters, because the future of mental health support in places like the South Bronx depends on professionals understanding people before systems.

These values aren’t just words sitting on a wall somewhere.

They show up in the conversations happening behind closed doors. In the way people are treated when they come in carrying things they’ve been trying to hold together on their own for way too long.

They show up in the trust that gets built over time. When our community keeps coming back, and women open up during She Steps Up.

They also show up when interns learn how community care actually works, not just how it’s described in a textbook.

This work only works when people feel seen, respected, supported, and not judged for where they’re starting from.

That’s the standard here. Always.

A lot of what’s being built at SUBL right now comes down to connection.

Not networking in the polished, corporate sense, but real connection.

The kind where people know they can come here during some of the hardest moments of their lives without having to figure everything out alone.

That’s part of why outreach matters so much right now. To help more people know there’s a place in the South Bronx where support actually exists.

The work keeps growing and so do the relationships behind it.

Running a nonprofit responsibly means constantly balancing today’s needs with the long-term work of building something sustainable.

Every program, every support group, every step toward Article 31 takes people, infrastructure, planning, compliance, and an enormous amount of care behind the scenes. The work is deeply human, but it also requires strong systems to support it responsibly.

That’s why transparency matters so much to us.

Our Annual Impact Report shares where SUBL is headed, what’s being built, and the real investment it takes to provide meaningful, community-based support in the South Bronx. It reflects the work happening every day, but also the foundation being built for what comes next.

To everyone who continues to support this mission, thank you. Donor support directly impacts our ability to grow thoughtfully, expand access to care, and continue to show up for this community with integrity, innovation, and accountability.

Trying to stay housed affects your mental health. It just does.

The stress of falling behind, getting notices, trying to keep things together while running out of options… that takes a toll.

Research shows people facing housing instability are far more likely to experience anxiety and depression, especially when support is hard to access.

That connection is real, and it’s something we see every day here in the South Bronx.

Unpopular opinion: Interns shouldn’t just sit in the background and observe.

At SUBL, our interns are part of the team.

They’re helping lead She Steps Up, creating space for women to connect, open up, and access mental health support in a group setting that feels real and human.

They’re helping develop future projects, contributing ideas, learning how community care actually works, and building clinical skills in real time alongside the people they’re supporting.

And honestly, that experience matters.

Not just for the interns, but for the future of mental health support in communities like the South Bronx.

These are the moments we live for. The ones we work so hard for.

Seeing real joy again after someone has been through some of the hardest moments of their life.

That’s why this work matters so much to us. And it’s a big part of why we’re working toward Article 31 certification.

What does that actually mean?

It means being able to provide licensed outpatient mental health services directly within the community, instead of sending people somewhere else and hoping they can navigate it all on their own.

More access to care and more support closer to home.
