The City Council is - once again - considering a bill to create no-speech zones around schools in New York City. The bill could effectively ban protests across thousands of city blocks.⁠

Mayor Mamdani stood up for free speech and rightly vetoed an earlier version of the bill. Now Julie Menin, the City Council Speaker, is trying to pass this amended version with a veto-proof majority. The video from this arrest is concerning.

It's right that this incident is being investigated - and the residents of Rochester deserve for the findings of that investigation, and any disciplinary outcomes, to be made public. Law enforcement should not use excessive force against New Yorkers.
