A great on the importance of mentorship, written by a current college student who mentors high schoolers as they navigate career exploration and the transition from high school to college: "Students are expected to make life-shaping decisions early, often without the information needed to make them well. A study found that fewer than half of Gen Z students felt they had enough information in high school to determine the best path after graduation."

For STC's interview series, Schools That Can caught up with Anisten, former STC intern and current college student! 💡 During her internship with Schools That Can when she was a high school student at Northgate School District, Anisten published a project that captured the perspectives of students in Pittsburgh and New York as they thought about their future plans. It was a powerful snapshot of how it feels to be a young person planning for the future.

Now, Anisten tells STC about the transition from high school to college, the tip that's been most helpful so far, and excitement to continue learning and making a difference in the future. Give it a read!

On November 18th, Schools That Can was joined by over 70 students from 7 schools across New York City for the first-ever Students That Connect Symposium: Exploring AI hosted at SUNYGlobalCenter. 💻 💡 Students heard an incredible keynote from Neha Shukla, engaged in a rapid-fire debate using research, collaboration, and communication skills, and worked with the awesome Playlab AI team to build apps that solved challenges facing their communities.

Big news! 📣 🎉 Schools That Can and The South Bronx Community Charter High School are among the winners of the U.S. Department of Education’s Career Z Challenge! This multi-year challenge focuses on supporting work-based learning experiences. Together, we’re building a strong work-based learning ecosystem that focuses on career readiness curriculum, real-world internship and work-based learning experiences, and competencies in the curriculum that align to durable skills.

Our partnership is one of only nine winners to be named in this multi-phase challenge, and we are grateful for the national recognition and support of the Career Z Challenge team. We’re proud of this partnership, and can’t wait to expand this work to reach even more schools! Every week is Volunteer Week for Schools That Can! 🎉 An important element of our career readiness work is ensuring young people have chances to build connections, get the inside scoop on careers, and imagine themselves in the world of work—and that couldn't happen without our extraordinary volunteers!

Whether they are reviewing resumes or hosting mock interviews, listening to students make professional introductions at networking mixers, shining a light on their own career paths through Q&As, or offering project-based challenges for students to sharpen their skills, our network of volunteers help ensure career preparation is connected to the real world.
