Fund for the City of New York The Fund for the City of New York was established by the Ford Foundation in 1968 with the mandate to improve the quality of life for all New Yorkers.

Conversation was only part of what made our evening with Person Place Thing, last night, so special. We were also thrilled to welcome Duo Kayo, cellist Titilayo Ayangade and violist Edwin Kaplan, whose live performance brought another dimension to the evening.

The music duo is known for pairing expressive performance with a commitment to new works and lesser-known pieces in the repertoire. Their music provided a wonderful complement to Randy Cohen’s conversation with 2026 Sloan Public Service Award recipient Dr. Theodore “Ted” Long.

Our thanks to Titilayo and Edwin for sharing their artistry with us and helping make the evening so memorable.

Last night, the Fund was delighted to welcome Randy Cohen for a live recording of Person Place Thing (www.personplacething.org) with our 2026 Sloan Public Service Award recipient Dr. Theodore “Ted” Long.

Randy’s distinctive interview format asks guests to approach their own stories indirectly; through a person, a place, and a thing that hold meaning for them. It made for an engaging conversation and offered a chance to get to know Ted beyond the titles and accomplishments that define his remarkable career in public service.

Many thanks to Randy for bringing Person Place Thing to the Fund and creating space for such a thoughtful and personal conversation.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for a special evening of conversation, storytelling, and music at the Fund. We were delighted to host a live recording of Person Place Thing with Randy Cohen, featuring Dr. Theodore “Ted” Long, a 2026 Sloan Public Service Award recipient, with music by Duo Kayo.

The Sloan Public Service Awards celebrate extraordinary New York City public servants, and evenings like this give us another opportunity to recognize not only what our honorees accomplish, but the people behind that work.

Dr. Ted Long’s work at NYC Health + Hospitals has focused on expanding access to care and building systems capable of responding to New Yorkers both every day and during moments of extraordinary need. That service earned him recognition as a 2026 Sloan Public Service Award recipient.

Today, he serves as System Chief Medical Officer for Clinical Services and Population Health at NYC Health + Hospitals, where he oversees clinical services across ambulatory and acute care and leads the system’s broader population health framework.

In 2026, the Fund for the City of New York recognized Dr. Long with a Sloan Public Service Award for his extraordinary contributions to New York City. Now we’re getting to know the person behind the public service.
