Concerning statistics regarding the rising su***de rates in Malawi.

Data recorded by the police in Lilongwe, Malawi’s capital, shows a troubling trend, particularly among men. Between September 2018 and June 2019, 128 cases of su***de were recorded, along with five cases of attempted su***de, totaling 133 incidents. Of those 133 people, only five were women.

Family problems and economic hardship are cited as key contributing factors to these deaths.

“According to Franklin Kilembe, who runs a private clinic in Lilongwe where he counsels people with mental-health problems, men mostly commit su***de because of economic hardship. “In our cultural setup, a man is supposed to be the breadwinner of the family. When the man loses his job, his economic lifeline is cut, and he becomes depressed. As a result, he thinks of hanging himself,” says Kilembe. Because of Malawi’s bad economy, more companies are expected to lay off workers, which probably means more su***des, he warns.”

“The Visa Bond Pilot Program requires nationals from these countries, who are traveling to the United States on B-1 or B-2 nonimmigrant visas, to post a cash bond before being allowed entry. The bond amount ranges from $5,000 to $15,000 and it will be refunded in full upon the traveler’s timely departure from the U.S. If the individual adheres to the visa terms and leaves the country within the designated timeframe, the bond will be returned. This initiative aims to reduce the rate of overstay, which has been a growing concern for U.S. immigration authorities, particularly for nationals from countries with higher rates of visa non-compliance.”

The 2025-2026 lean season food insecurity response programme began in Mzimba District’s Northern Region, where Ansa urged leaders to ensure aid reaches those most in need and prevent system exploitation.

“The programme will provide 50 kilograms of maize per family, with some households receiving K90,000 in cash.

The government needs 147 billion kwacha to assist all affected people but has secured only 62 billion kwacha, Moleni said.

“We did the research where we found out that 4 million people are facing a hunger crisis in the country,” he said.

World Food Programme Country Director Hyoung Joon Lim pledged support for Malawi’s efforts to end the hunger crisis.

Inkosi ya Makaosi M’mbelwa V, a paramount chief, praised the initiative but urged citizens not to sell their maize allotments.

He requested the timely distribution of farm input subsidies so farmers can plant early.

Beneficiary Memory Mvula said the assistance will help reduce hunger in her family.

The Department of Disaster Management Affairs is administering the programme.”

Chess Lover Introduces Game to Malawi’s Prisons, Schools and Street Kids
Susan Namangale fell in love with the game at age 9 in her small village, and she’s now on a mission to deliver a message to the whole country: Chess is good for everyone.

While most of her teenage schoolmates spent their allowances on snacks and other small treats, Susan Namangale made an unexpected move with the little money she had.

She and a few friends pooled their change to buy two chessboards for their school in Malawi.

“If my mother knew then what I had done with the little pocket money she had given me, I would have been in trouble, especially looking back on how much we struggled,” said Ms. Namangale, dressed in a black suit and a white shirt with a checkered necktie, an outfit evocative of the game she adores. “But that’s how much I had fallen in love.”

Now 49, Ms Namangale is on a mission to change the narrative that chess is only for the elite. She has introduced the game to rural schools, prisons and some of the world’s most underserved communities.

Results of a study in Malawi showed that chewing gum containing xylitol, a naturally occurring compound that helps reduce bacteria associated with gum disease, was associated with a 24% reduction in preterm births. In the 3-year study of 10,000 participants, researchers found that the study group that received chewing gum also saw a 30% drop in low-birthweight babies compared with the control group. The study was led by Dr. Greg Valentine, associate professor of pediatrics at the UW School of Medicine.

Calling all RPCVs, friends and family of Malawi, and fellow educators!! How would you like to help make a dream come true for two rural Community Day Secondary School (CDSS) English teachers from Mangochi (Ntonda CDSS) and Nkhotakota (Mkaika CDSS)?! If so, here is what you need to know:

Sarah Mkatawila, Rowland Mhango, and I took a leap of faith and submitted a proposal for the 2025 Comparative International Education Society (CIES) Conference, the largest and oldest of these 47 societies around the world. The conference theme - “Envisioning Education in a Digital Society” - aligns with our 3-year Peace Corps virtual service project. We are THRILLED to have received an invitation to present our topic: Pioneering teacher-created, student-centered English lessons designed for RACHEL/Solar Spell digital libraries across rural Malawian secondary schools. The conference will be held in Chicago from March 22 - 26, 2025. *Link in Bio to donate
