Via our wonderful past Fashion Forward speaker

Got a bit of free time in August? Fancy trying out speculative design? Want to change the world(s)? Join the Fashion Fictions prototyping series!

The Fashion Fictions project responds to the urgent need for change in the mainstream globalised fashion system by bringing people together to generate, experience and reflect on engaging fictional visions of alternative fashion worlds.

In August the Fashion Fictions prototyping experience is available online for the first time! Work solo or with others to create an image/object to represent life in a fictional world. (Because to create a better fashion system, we have to be able to imagine alternatives!)

15-17 August, 11.00am-12.30pm UK time (attend all three sessions); free, open to all. No specific creative skills required!

While digital fashion is rapidly making headways to mainstream media, and is celebrated as an environmentally friendly mode of consumption, its social impacts are often overlooked. Fashion Forward founders Sara Emilia Bernat and Doris Domoszlai-Lantner have collaborated on a piece that investigates the many effects of online dressing, especially in regards to marginalized communities. Sew Her Name is a social justice project by Kate Sekules , a PhD researcher and mending activist. Kate created Sew Her Name in response to the Say Her Name social movement, founded by her personal hero, one of the founders of Critical Race Theory (CRT), Kimberlé Crenshaw, which seeks to raise awareness about the disproportionately high percentage of Black female victims of police brutality in the United States. She honors the women and girls who have been hurt and killed by sewing their names onto garments that she mends— serving as an act of “menditation,” a term imbued with her emphasis on meditation and the act of mending clothes, rather than throwing them away. The Fashion Forward journal is proud to feature the work of Csenge Laszlo, the designer behind the Budapest-based brand Lalone. Csenge creates accessories that celebrate non-conformist and unapologetic fashion. She believes that the many blissful aspects of childhood shouldn't fade away after growing up. Her designs are meant to save those particular features and bring some simple joy to everyday life. However, the creative reuse of childhood memories isn't the only theme of Lalone. Most pieces are upcycled thrift store treasures, redefined with clay and collage printed textiles.

Growing up in the post-communist Romania, designer Borbala Ferencz Bori Ferencz reached for the most common material, trash, when designing her first garments. Over the years, realizing that she is not alone in the journey of turning waste into treasure, she tapped into the global community of upcyclers. A community organizer, educator, and fierce DIY warrior, she is now sharing a step-by-step guide and pattern to a piece that anyone can make with ease at home, using their unwanted garments. How can costuming choices affect storytelling in film? Fashion Forward fellow Eleonora Dal Bosco explores the topic in her article on the q***rness and fashion in two classic pieces of Italian cinema.

Italian filmmaker Luchino Visconti was known for creating jaw-dropping, scandalous films that pushed the limits of cinematography, especially for his time. The q***r storylines in The Damned and Death in Venice are strengthened by the costumes, which Eleonora argues fetishizes men's uniforms, including N**i army uniforms and the ubiquitous three-piece suit.
