From Lausanne to the Istanbul Pogrom and Beyond: The Systematic Destruction of Turkey’s Indigenous Hellenic (Rum) Community

Join us tomorrow September 6, for EMBCA’s “Before and After the Istanbul Pogrom of September 6–7, 1955: The Destruction of the Hellenic (Rum) Community of Turkey” at 2:00 PM EDT / 9:00 PM Athens (EEST). The Youtube link to the event is below to listen live or later.

Introduced and Moderated by:
Lou Katsos, President, EMBCA

Distinguished Panelists:
• Dr. Alexandros K. Kyrou – Salem State University
• Dr. Konstantinos Tsitselikis – University of Macedonia
• Dr. Elizabeth H. Prodromou – Boston College
• Prof. Dr. Johannes Niehoff-Panagiotidis – Freie Universität Berlin
• Dr. Harry G. Dimopoulos – International businessman and survivor of the 1955 Istanbul Pogrom
• Stelios Taketzis – Producer and former Executive Director, COSMOS FM

At the time of the Treaty of Lausanne (1923), approximately 100,000 Greeks remained in Constantinople, representing 12–15% of the city’s population. Today, only an estimated 1,500–2,500 members of the historic Rum community remain in a metropolis of nearly 16 million. This dramatic decline resulted from decades of discrimination, economic persecution, organized violence, confiscations, and forced emigration.

The panel including a survivor will examine the Istanbul Pogrom within the broader context of the 1942 Wealth Tax (Varlık Vergisi), discriminatory legislation, restrictions on minority institutions, property confiscations, and the 1964 expulsions, tracing how these policies dismantled a community that had flourished in Constantinople for nearly seventeen centuries.

The attacks of September 6–7, 1955, were sparked by fabricated reports that Greeks had bombed the Turkish Consulate in Thessaloniki. It was later established that the bomb had been planted by a Turkish employee of the consulate. The false story became the planned pretext for a coordinated assault on Greek homes, businesses, churches, schools, cemeteries, and community institutions.

Approximately 4,214 Greek homes, 1,004 businesses, 73 churches, two monasteries, and 26 Greek schools were damaged or destroyed. Between 13 and 16 Greeks, including two Orthodox priests, and one Armenian were killed, while Armenian and Jewish properties were also attacked.

The discussion will also examine the Treaty of Lausanne’s guarantees of minority rights and how those protections were progressively eroded. Beyond recounting the events, the panel will explore broader questions of minority rights, religious freedom, cultural heritage, international law, historical memory, restitution, and justice, and what lessons this history offers for protecting vulnerable minorities today.

Join us for this important discussion on one of the defining tragedies of modern Hellenism and the systematic policies that led to the near destruction of Turkey’s indigenous Hellenic (Rum) community.

EDT / 9:00 μ.μ. Αθήνα (EEST).

Λου Κάτσος, Πρόεδρο, EMBCA

• Δρ. Κύρου – Πανεπιστήμιο Salem State
• Δρ.

From State Capitols to the Eastern Mediterranean: Hellenic American Legislators Shaping America’s Future

Join EMBCA’s 4th Hellenic American Bipartisan State Legislators Forum webinar panel discussion this Sunday, August 2, 2026, at 2:00 PM EDT / 9:00 PM Athens (EEST).

The discussion will be introduced and moderated by Lou Katsos, President of the East Mediterranean Business Culture Alliance (EMBCA). Our distinguished bipartisan panel includes Lou Raptakis, State Senator from Rhode Island; Anastasia Travers, State House Representative from Arizona; Tina Courpas, State House Representative from Connecticut; Steven R. Malagari, State House Representative from Pennsylvania; and Savet Constantine, State House Representative from Connecticut.

To join, simply click the posted link below and watch live or later at your convenience.

State legislators are among the most influential, yet often least recognized, public officials in American government. While national attention frequently focuses on Washington, it is the fifty state legislatures that enact many of the laws affecting our daily lives. They shape policy on education, healthcare, public safety, transportation, housing, taxation, economic development, labor, energy, infrastructure, environmental protection, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, emergency preparedness, and the stewardship of billions of dollars in public resources.

Often called America’s “laboratories of democracy,” state legislatures develop innovative policies that frequently influence national debate. Working closely with their constituents, legislators craft practical, bipartisan solutions to the increasingly complex challenges facing their states and the nation.

This timely forum brings together distinguished American state legislators of Hellenic descent to discuss the most pressing issues confronting state government today. Topics will include economic growth, fiscal responsibility, education, healthcare, public safety, housing affordability, infrastructure, immigration, energy policy, artificial intelligence, election administration, and the impact of recent national and state elections on governance across the United States.

The conversation will also explore how state legislators increasingly engage in issues extending beyond their state borders. As elected officials of Hellenic descent, many bring unique insight to U.S.–Greece–Cyprus relations, Israel and the broader Middle East, Eastern Mediterranean security, religious freedom, energy cooperation, cybersecurity, foreign investment, and the future of NATO.

Working with governors, congressional delegations, federal agencies, and national organizations, many Hellenic American legislators have helped strengthen the U.S.–Hellenic strategic partnership, support Greece and Cyprus, promote cooperation among the United States, Greece, Cyprus, and Israel, and advocate on issues affecting the global Hellenic community. The panel will also examine regional stability, humanitarian concerns, maritime security, energy corridors, and current policy debates affecting the balance of power in the Eastern Mediterranean, including the proposed sale of F-35 fighter aircraft to Turkey.

Many of our panelists are also members of the World Hellenic Inter-Parliamentary Association (PADEE–WHIA), a global network of legislators of Hellenic heritage working closely with the Hellenic Parliament on issues concerning Hellas, Cyprus, democracy, human rights, religious freedom, international law, and the Hellenic diaspora.

Whether your interests are public policy, government, Hellenic affairs, or international relations, this forum offers a rare opportunity to hear directly from elected officials who are shaping legislation, strengthening their communities, and helping define America’s domestic priorities and its relationship with the Eastern Mediterranean.

Join us for what promises to be a thought-provoking, timely, and engaging bipartisan discussion with some of the most accomplished Hellenic American public servants serving in elected office today.

From Ithaca to Hollywood: The Odyssey, History, and Cultural Authenticity

🗓 Sunday, July 12, 2026
🕑 2:00 PM EDT / 9:00 PM Athens EEST

The livestream link is below. If you can’t join us live, the program will also be available afterward on the EMBCA YouTube Channel.

As anticipation builds for Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, opening worldwide on July 17, the film has already sparked international discussion over casting, historical and archaeological accuracy, language, cultural representation, identity, and the limited participation of Hellenic actors and scholars.

Using the forthcoming film as a timely point of departure, not as a critique or endorsement, we will explore the enduring significance of Homer’s Odyssey: its historical and archaeological foundations, literary brilliance, timeless themes, and extraordinary influence on world civilization nearly three millennia after it was composed.

I will be moderating the discussion and our distinguished panel includes:

• Dr. Joel P. Christensen – Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, City University of New York Graduate Center, and internationally recognized Homeric scholar.
• Dr. Suzanne Lye – Associate Professor and Director of Undergraduate Studies, Department of Classics, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
• Professor Nicholas Alexiou – Sociologist, author, poet, and Director of the Hellenic American Project, Queens College.
• George Zouvelos – Actor, writer, and film director.
• Dimitrios Katsikis – Internationally acclaimed artist and researcher of ancient armor, known as “the modern Hephaestus.”

Whether you are a classicist, historian, archaeologist, filmmaker, educator, student, or simply someone who loves great storytelling, this promises to be a fascinating and timely discussion.

Join us as we explore why Homer’s Odyssey continues to challenge, inspire, and captivate the world nearly 3,000 years after it was first composed.

Dear Friends and Colleagues:

Join us Sunday for EMBCA’s “1776 America / 1821 Hellas: Bridging Revolutions – Reflections Across Time” Webinar Panel Discussion on Sunday, May 31, 2026 at 2:00 P.M. EST / 9:00 P.M. Athens EEST. To join live simply click the link below based on your time zone, or later on EMBCA’s YouTube Channel.

The discussion will be introduced and moderated by Lou Katsos, President of the East Mediterranean Business Culture Alliance (EMBCA), who will also contribute to the discussion.

The distinguished panel, currently in formation, will include:

Constantine G. Hatzidimitriou — Author and Historian
Alexander Billinis — Author, Writer, and Clemson University Lecturer
Eric Hill — Technologist, MMA Instructor, and Martial Artist

As part of its continuing exploration of the historical, cultural, and civilizational ties linking the Eastern Mediterranean, Europe, and the United States, EMBCA proudly presents this timely discussion examining the profound relationship between the American Revolution of 1776 and the Greek Revolution of 1821, two defining struggles for liberty connected through ideals, sacrifice, memory, and historical influence.

Taking place during the historic convergence of the 250th Anniversary of the American Declaration of Independence and the 205th Anniversary of the Greek War of Independence, the webinar will explore how the revolutionary spirit of one era inspired another, shaping democratic thought, constitutional governance, national self-determination, and the enduring global pursuit of freedom.

The panel will reflect upon the philosophical, political, and spiritual currents linking the Founding Fathers of the United States with the rebirth of the modern Hellenic state, while examining the roles of Philhellenism, classical heritage, faith, sacrifice, diplomacy, and revolutionary identity in shaping both nations.

Special attention will also be given to how the Greek Revolution profoundly affected the United States itself , inspiring Philhellenic movements, humanitarian activism, literature, education, and broader American discussions surrounding liberty and national identity. The discussion will further explore the Revolution’s influence upon the American abolitionist movement and the early women’s suffrage movement, particularly through the activism of Philhellenic women who connected the Greek struggle for freedom with broader human rights and democratic causes.

Ninety Years After Venizelos: The Statesman Who Shaped Modern Greece

Join us today for EMBCA’s Webinar Panel Discussion
“Ninety Years After Venizelos: The Life, Leadership, and Legacy of Eleftherios Venizelos.”

Lou Katsos, EMBCA’s President, will be moderating the panel. The webinar link is provided below and the discussion can also be viewed later on EMBCA’s YouTube Channel.

Panelists include:
• Nikos Kastrinakis, President, World Council of Cretans
• Dr. Christopher Lamb, former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense, award-winning author and scholar
• Alexander Billinis, author and lecturer, Clemson University
• Dr. Peter Stavrianidis, educator and scholar
• Stavros Stavridis, author and independent historical researcher

Ninety years after his death on March 18 in 1936, Eleftherios Venizelos remains inseparable from the making of modern Greece and is widely regarded as the most consequential Greek political leader of the modern era.

Born in Ottoman-ruled Crete in 1864, Venizelos emerged from the struggle for autonomy and union with Greece. After arriving in Athens in 1910, he initiated sweeping reforms—including the 1911 constitutional revision, military reorganization, and administrative modernization—that strengthened the Greek state.

These reforms proved decisive during the Balkan Wars (1912–1913), when Greece nearly doubled its territory and population with the incorporation of Macedonia, Epirus, Crete, and much of the Aegean islands.

Venizelos also played a major role on the international stage. At the Paris Peace Conference of 1919, he secured key territorial gains in Thrace and the Smyrna region of Asia Minor, placing Greece at the center of post-World War I diplomacy.

The Asia Minor catastrophe of 1922 dramatically reshaped Greek history, yet Venizelos later demonstrated political realism although controversial with the 1930 Greek-Turkish Friendship Treaty, seeking stability after years of conflict.

The transformations of the Venizelian era also helped shape the modern Greek diaspora, including the Greek-American communities that grew in cities such as New York, Chicago, and Boston.

Venizelos died in exile in Paris in 1936, leaving behind a legacy as a reformer, strategist, and statesman who profoundly shaped modern Greece.

Join us for this discussion on the life and legacy of one of the most transformative figures in modern Hellenic history.

Join us Sunday, February 8, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. EST / 9:00 p.m. Athens EEST, as EMBCA will host an important panel discussion on the Hellenic language, one of the world’s oldest continuously spoken and written languages, and a cornerstone of Hellenic civilization. The program entitled “The Hellenic Language: Identity, Continuity, and the American Diaspora.” , is being held on the eve of International Greek Language Day, and will explore the enduring role of the Hellenic language in shaping identity, preserving heritage, and educating the next generation of Hellenic Americans. Watch Live on YouTube: Click the link below to join in real time or view later on the EMBCA channel.

The discussion will be introduced and moderated by Lou Katsos, EMBCA President, and will feature a distinguished panel of educators, scholars, and community leaders:

Panelists will reflect on the present realities and future possibilities of Hellenic language education in the United States, discussing the challenges faced by heritage learners, such as reduced instructional time, declining enrollment in afternoon and weekend programs, and the predominance of English in daily life. They will also explore opportunities for renewal, including innovative pedagogy, culturally relevant curricula, interdisciplinary connections, and the thoughtful use of technology to engage young learners.

The conversation will highlight the close relationship between language, culture, and identity, showing how the Hellenic language has historically strengthened communal continuity and continues to connect diaspora communities with the Hellenic Republic . Attention will also be given to the essential role of families, schools, churches, universities, and cultural organizations in fostering environments where the Hellenic language is not only taught but spoken, valued, and celebrated as a living language.

This program is an invitation to youth, parents, educators, clergy, scholars, and community leaders to participate in a meaningful discussion that reaffirms the Hellenic language as both a shared cultural inheritance and a vibrant living tradition. Join us in honoring International Greek Language Day and supporting the educators and institutions that carry the Hellenic language forward for future generations.
