Women are Rising up throughout NYC to Condemn Speaker Julie Menin

“Refusing to Pass Intro 303 Demeans All of Us!”

Despite workers forcing many home care agencies to split 24-hour workdays into two 12-hour shifts, New York City Speaker Julie Menin insists that the sexist, racist and torturous 24-hour workday must continue. Speaker Menin sends the message that the work of caring for people that is still mainly shouldered by women has no value at all. Women and men from all walks of life and from throughout the city are outraged and will convene at the gate of City Hall to demand Speaker Menin immediately pass Intro 303 to end 24-hour workdays!

But Speaker Julie Menin Speaker Julie Menin won’t accept that and insists on blocking the “No More 24” Act because she thinks care work is worthless and women should just be doing it 24 hours a day without sleep!

Women are looked down upon because the care work that is mostly done by women—teachers, nurses, social workers, mothers—is belittled in our society. Yet, Speaker Julie Menin Julie Menin now upholds and worsens this systemic sexism by refusing to bring the “No More 24” Act to a vote, to end the 24-hour workday in New York City! On the 7th day of home care workers' hunger strike, the United Nations sent an allegation directly to Speaker Julie Menin telling her to respond to the hunger strike and give home care workers justice. Instead she upholds sexist violence, has broken her promise twice, and even tried to amend the bill to keep the 24-hour workday going.

The time is now to call out fake feminists. Join us on October 3rd to unite to build a women's movement which values care workers!

HUNGER STRIKE DAY 8: home care workers concluded their hunger strike yesterday and announced they will return for a big protest October 3rd against Speaker Julie Menin. They announced big wins from the hunger strike - Governor Kathy Hochul’s DOL reopening all illegally closed wage theft cases for union workers, unwgdawg_ sending their allegation letter directly to the NYC government, and the whole world uniting against Speaker Julie Menin’s sexist violence. We will be back October 3rd and will unite the entire city to end the 24 hr workday.

Thank you to everyone who came out, supported, and donated to the hunger strike!! Stay tuned on ways to join the organizing in the coming months.
