Happy World Teachers’Day! 📝📚📋

In honor of World Teachers' Day yesterday, we wanted to share this inspiring story from our Masa Israel Teaching Fellow Jessy, who finished her program in Petach Tikva with Destination Israel a few months ago.

Our Fellows in Petach Tikvah serve in a variety of schools representative of the city’s diversity and contribute to the future success of Israeli children by giving them the essential basis of native spoken English.

Jessy, who did the MITF program in 2020-2021, during a year of virtual teaching, lockdowns, unique experiences shared with us this amazing story:

"This is one of the kids I teach in 5th grade. She taught herself English by watching tv and listening to music. She never reads or writes because it’s hard for her and she hates it. But slowly I’ve been getting her to read and write different stories and comics which is what she loves. In my last weeks of the program, she came up to me and showed me a book that she’d bought to read on her own time. It’s so amazing because it’s like pulling teeth to get her to read, and the fun fact that she is doing it in her free time makes me so proud of her!"

We love hearing stories like these how our Fellows leave an impact on their kids and on Israeli society.

Today we bid farewell in a festive ceremony to our Chairman for the last 3 years, יצחק (בוז'י) הרצוג - Isaac Herzog who leaves on Wednesday to take over as Israel's new president. 🇮🇱
"“The Jewish Agency is doing holy work on behalf of the Jewish people. I’m grateful for the incredible opportunity to lead such an amazing organization "- Herzog shared.

Hundreds gathered at The Jewish Agency's courtyard to say thank you and goodbye, including American, Ethiopian, French and Ukrainian immigrants and Jewish Agency Shlichim (Israeli emissaries) from around the world. 💙

We will share videos from the emotional ceremony soon. Stay tuned!

Our thoughts are with the community in , FL after an apartment building collapsed there tonight.
We pray survivors will be found. Our hearts are with their families.

Some 20 Jews are among the missing persons, the Israeli foreign ministry confirmed. It is not yet clear if any hold Israeli citizenship.

Kamal-Mreeh will represent the Jewish Agency, in its efforts to connect with North American college campuses on Israel.

We are excited to announce our collaboration with The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington to bring Gadeer Kamal-Mreeh, the first female Druze member of Israel’s legislature, to Washington, DC as a senior shlicha (Israeli emissary). She will also support Israel engagement efforts on North American college campuses working closely with Hillel International.

Gadeer will be the first Druze senior shlicha to represent The Jewish Agency, joining the organization’s team of more than 2,000 shlichim (emissaries) stationed in over 60 countries and the 10 shlichim already working in the Greater Washington region.

“Gadeer Kamal-Mreeh’s personal and professional journey make her a powerful embodiment of Israeli society’s diversity and complexity. We are thrilled that this unprecedented appointment will bring greater awareness regarding that diverse landscape to the United States as part of our efforts to strengthen understanding of Israel worldwide,” said Amira Ahronoviz, our Director General and CEO. “This decision was made with the enthusiastic support of יצחק (בוז'י) הרצוג - Isaac Herzog, our outgoing Chairman of the Executive and the State of Israel’s president-elect. This landmark step for The Jewish Agency has been in the works for quite some time, and we are delighted to see it happen through our strong partnership with The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington.”

Throughout the thousands of missiles launched at Israel by Hamas in May during Operation Guardian of the Walls, The Jewish Agency for Israel continued to care for and ensure the safety of our beneficiaries, including new immigrants, seniors, Masa participants, youth at-risk and more. We assisted those in need as well as the broader Israeli society during the emergency situation and mobilized global solidarity movements with communities and partners around the world.
