Juneteenth (June 19th) recognizes the day the Emancipation Proclamation was enforced in Galveston, Texas—over two years after the document was signed. Juneteenth commemorates the liberation of enslaved Black Americans and celebrates the end of slavery in the U.S.
Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, resilience, and community. It is also a reminder of the systemic inequities that persist today. True liberation is impossible without housing justice.
In New York City, systemic racism, economic disparity, and family rejection intersect to disproportionately push Black youth particularly Black LGBTQIA+ youth into housing instability. At Homeward NYC, we believe that providing safe, affirming, and permanent supportive housing is a vital part of honoring the legacy of Juneteenth.
True freedom begins with a safe place to call home, where you are celebrated exactly as you are. Today, we recommit to doing that work every day. 🖤❤️💛💚
