Happy Hispanic Heritage Month! 💙

From September 15 through October 15, the Latino Social Work Coalition & Scholarship Fund proudly celebrates the histories, cultures, contributions, and leadership of Hispanic and Latine communities.

For us, this month is also an opportunity to recognize the vital role Latino and bilingual social workers play in strengthening our communities. Representation matters — in the classroom, in the workforce, in leadership, and in every space where people seek support, healing, advocacy, and opportunity.

As we continue our work of strengthening the mental health workforce, we honor those who paved the way, uplift those leading today, and invest in the next generation of social workers who will continue shaping a more equitable future.

The Latino Social Work Coalition & Scholarship Fund is proud to congratulate our Executive Director, Luisa Lopez, on being named a 2026 City & State Nonprofit Trailblazer.

Under Luisa’s leadership, LSWC has expanded scholarship access for Latino and bilingual social work students, deepened our mentorship and professional development programming, and elevated the voices of social workers in legislative and policy spaces where decisions about our profession — and our communities — are made. She has been a steady advocate for a workforce that is too often overlooked and undervalued.

We also extend our congratulations to all of this year’s honorees! New York’s nonprofit sector is stronger because of the collective dedication represented in this cohort.

Yesterday, the Latino Social Work Coalition was proud to be on Capitol Hill for Social Work Day with Congressional Research Institute for Social Work and Policy. 🇺🇸

We had the opportunity to engage with social workers and students from across the country—building community, sharing strategies, and strengthening our collective voice at a critical moment for the profession.

We also brought our advocacy directly to our local elected officials, lifting up key issues including: • The Social Work Workforce Act • The growing threat of the deprofessionalization of social work degrees—and its downstream impact on student access, workforce pipelines, and community mental health.

This is what it looks like when social workers show up not just in practice spaces, but in policy spaces. 💼✨

Last night was everything we needed and more. ✨

Our Social Services Mixer brought together an incredible community of social workers, advocates, and changemakers—and the energy in the room was undeniable. From meaningful conversations to new connections (and yes, some dancing 💃🏽), it was a powerful reminder of the community we’re building together.

Thank you to everyone who showed up, poured into one another, and made the night so special. This work can be heavy, but spaces like this remind us that we don’t have to carry it alone.

A special thank you to Oyate Group for your continued support and to Nourish BX for hosting us so beautifully. We’re so grateful to partner with spaces and organizations that truly believe in community.
