QUA - LGBTQ Ukrainians in America

Dafna Rachok.

LGBTIQ+ IN DEFENSE OF UKRAINE

QUA - LGBTQ Ukrainians in America, in cooperation with House, Ukrainian LGBT Soldiers and our Allies, and KyivPride are thrilled to present a photo exhibition featuring portraits of LGBTIQ+ in defense of Ukraine.

The exhibition pairs striking portraits and personal stories of Ukrainian heroes collected and translated by Dafna Rachok and Alim Yakubov. It is framed as a conversation WITH extraordinary LGBTIQ+ Ukrainians who after Russia’s brutal invasion on February 24 started a new life as soldiers or volunteers, joining the army or starting a humanitarian project to help their communities, thus becoming defenders of their country and people. All of them chose to stay and fight against the Russian occupation and are risking their lives for a democratic and independent Ukraine.

Opening remarks will include Pylipenko, Leader of the Ukrainian Union of the LGBT military (in the video); Bogdan Globa, President of QUA - LGBTQ Ukrainians in America; and Emson - Director of KyivPride.

PARTICIPANT BIOS

Alim Yakubov is a Ukrainian Crimean/qirimli photographer. Like many Crimean Tatars, he lived in Uzbekistan until returning to his ancestral homeland of Crimea, where he lived until 2014. Following the Russian occupation, he was forced to move to Kyiv, where he lives and works today Alim has been engaged in photography since 2012 and works with portrait photography and stock photography. Before the full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022, he traveled a lot and was particularly into street photography.

Dafna Rachok, is a Ukrainian-born scholar and Ph.D. candidate at Indiana University Bloomington. Since February 24th, she has been a full-time volunteer helping the Ukrainian war effort. She has lived in Ukraine, Hungary, Canada, and the USA.

Is Ukraine the Liberal Island in Eastern Europe?

Click the link below to see the video blog Bogdan Globa and Dzvenyslava Shcherba

This talk features the amazing Dzvenyslava Shcherba – a Ukrainian human rights activist and human rights defender. Her activism is focused mostly on women’s rights and LGBTQI rights.
We spoke with Dzvenyslava about what is going on in Ukraine regarding human rights now, and daily life in Kyiv.

We also discussed the ongoing war and refugee crisis and the progress Ukraine made in LGBTQI human rights in comparison to Russia’s continuing persecution of LGBTQI people. The USA must continue supporting Ukraine to support human rights in Eastern Europe and worldwide.

So, if you are interested to know more about the current situation of LGBTQI folks in Ukraine - watch our video podcast and hear straight from an activist on the ground.

QUA - LGBTQ Ukrainians in America (an association of LGBTQI+ Ukrainians who live in the U.S.) and the Ukrainian LGBTQ organization Fulcrum UA cooperate together for initiating a coalition for investigating Russian anti-LGBTQ propaganda and hate crimes in Ukraine as a part of war crime against humanity. We hope the result of our research work will be a part of the trial process against Russia in the International Criminal Court.

QUA - LGBTQ Ukrainians in America

UKR/ENG

The story of the head of our organization Bogdan Globa may seem like the screenplay for the movie. But it is true. In the article he tells about his father who did not accept his son's sexual orientation and now is fighting for Ukraine and looking for communication with his son. Also Bogdan describes his mother evacuation and escape from occupied Bucha and explains how our organization under his management helps the Ukrainian LGBTQ + community

QUA - LGBTQ Ukrainians in America

QUA (LGBTQ Ukrainians in America) is the first non-governmental organization of LGBTQ Ukrainians and their allies in the United States.

QUA was founded in New York on August 24, 2019 by Bogdan Globa, a Ukrainian LGBTQ rights activist currently living in America, together with other Ukrainian human rights activists, including Dmytro Berezniak, Alex Burlakov, Sergiy Sibel, and Dmytro Orlovsky and Yana Slesarchuk. The organization is dedicated to helping LGBTQ Ukrainians address a wide range of issues, including political asylum, LGBTQ rights advocacy and promotion, community-building, and cross-cultural cooperation between American and Ukrainian LGBTQ communities.

By creating a platform to share experiences, QUA hopes to foster connections between members of the community and to serve as a valuable resource.
