Remembering Acharya Ramanatha Jha (रमानाथ झा) on his birth anniversary. Born on 21 September 1906 in Ujan (Dharmapur), Darbhanga, he helped give modern Maithili prose its form and standard.
As editor of Maithili Sahitya Patra, he brought greater uniformity to Maithili spelling and created a lasting editorial tradition. As Librarian of Darbhanga Raj Library, he rebuilt and reorganized nearly 60,000 books after the devastating 1934 earthquake.
He later became the first Head of the Maithili P.G. Department at C.M. College, Darbhanga, and represented Maithili at the Sahitya Akademi for seven years.
His scholarship covered Sanskrit manuscripts, Buddhist literature in Pali, Dharmaśāstra, Jyotiṣa, Ta**ra, Panji texts, and Maithili language and literature. His work on Vidyapati and the Panji system remains an important part of Mithila studies. His collected works, Rachanavali, span four volumes.
