On January 6 WAFL had a film screening of Free Chol Soo Lee and a special Q&A with director Julie Ha and narrator Sebastian Yoon! Swipe to read our students' testimonies 🤗

Free Chol Soo Lee (dir. Julie Ha and Eugene Yi) is a PBS documentary about Chol Soo Lee, a Korean immigrant who was wrongfully convicted of murder in 1973, and the subsequent movement to advocate for his justice. Although this is an often-forgotten part of AAPI history, the Free Chol Soo Lee movement was significant as an early moment of Asian American mobilization that reckoned with racial profiling in the criminal justice system. Lee was exonerated of the 1973 murder ten years later as a result of the Free Chol Soo Lee movement.

OUR ASIAN AMERICA: Swipe for our students' testimonies! ✨

ABOUT THE SESSION: The session opened with a discussion on stereotypes of Asian people in the United States, and how the students experienced these stereotypes in their day-to-day lives. In order to understand where these stereotypes come from and how they are perpetuated through history, the students learned about various aspects of AAPI history from the earliest laws restricting Asian immigration to the murder of Vincent Chin. The students also learned about examples of Asian American social movements and discussed how the model minority myth is used to create divisions between marginalized groups. The session concluded with a discussion on how Asian Americans have a history of protest and how its enduring legacy impacts our lives today.

On November 11, the WAFL Program 🧇 had a film screening of Liquor Store Dreams (dir. So Yun Um) and a special Q&A with the director ! Swipe to read some of our student testimonies 🤗

Directed by So Yun Um, Liquor Store Dreams tells the story of two Korean American children of liquor store owners as they confront the complex legacies of LA’s racial landscape, particularly the 1991 murder of Latasha Harlins and the Los Angeles Riots of 1992. The students used the WAFL discord server to give live commentary on the film as they reflected on their own experiences as young Asian Americans.

The students were later joined by director So Yun Um for a special Q&A, where she took questions ranging from the filmmaking process to the need for minority creators to tell their stories for themselves.
