The Swahili word Umoja means unity—a value that is more vital now than ever. At the Umoja Flute Institute (UFI), we are committed to fostering that spirit of unity by creating enriching opportunities for flutists of African descent through workshops, performances, mentorship, and professional development.
Thanks to your support, Umoja has built a thriving, affirming community. Through in-person and virtual events, regional meet-ups, and partnerships with national organizations like the Flute Center, Flutistry Boston, and the National Flute Association (NFA), we continue to uplift and connect Black flutists across the country.
This past August, Umoja was honored to be a featured presenter at the 2025 NFA Convention in Atlanta. We hosted a flute choir reading session featuring works by Black composers, along with an informational session about our mission. This built on our 2023 debut at NFA, where Umoja premiered In Us, a collaborative commission between composer/flutist Allison Loggins-Hull and our student members. Our goals remain: to expand performance opportunities, foster community, and serve as a bridge for Black flutists to access resources and representation in national spaces.
Looking ahead, Umoja plans to host additional virtual masterclasses and sessions with guest artists, and we are laying the foundation for a professional development fund that will support the creative projects of Black flutists.
We invite you to be part of this continued momentum. Your donation—no matter the amount—helps us keep our events accessible and impactful.
