Being at Walt Disney World this week has caused me to think back to the first time my husband and I brought the girls to the resort. We had only been their foster parents for a few months when I had a conversation with the oldest child that sent a chill down my spine. Only nine years old, she looked into my eyes and, with sadness breaking through her voice, said “I don’t think I will ever feel joy.” She told me that living with us for the past few months had allowed her to feel safety, security and love but that she couldn’t imagine that she would ever know what it would feel like to experience joy. In that moment, watching a child I loved assume that joy was too far gone for her to grasp, I knew exactly what to do.
I booked a trip to the Walt Disney World Resort.
I made hotel and ticket reservations as fast as I could. I combed through the lists of rides in each of the theme parks and made a coordinating list of Disney films to have the girls “randomly” watch so that they would recognize characters that, at that time, were foreign to them. I stalked dining reservations until I finally secured breakfast with the princesses and booked two spots at the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique. Finally, one October evening with our video camera rolling, my husband and I handed them bags containing personalized t-shirts and Minnie Mouse ears and told them to put their shoes on because we had to catch the first flight of their young lives – to Walt Disney World.
The Magic Kingdom had the desired effect on my youngest daughter from the time we walked through the front gates. She looked like any other five year old girl experiencing Walt Disney World for the first time as she ran from ride to ride and gathered princess autographs. But my heart felt a little heavy as I watched our oldest daughter quietly walk down Main Street. I felt disappointed and silently chastised myself for believing that a theme park could be what brought this child the feeling of joy. She expressed gratefulness that we had brought her but she wasn’t overly animated or expressive as she watched the magic unfold around her.
What I didn’t know was that the magic wasn’t unfolding around her – it was unfolding inside of her.
I didn’t know it then, but joy was waiting for her when our log went flying down Splash Mountain. Joy was hiding behind the curtain that the princesses came out from; joy was in Elsa’s arms as she hugged her while cameras flashed. Joy was floating all around us when I leaned over to her during It’s A Small World and whispered that the ride looked the same as when I rode it as a little girl. Joy looked an awful lot like her first Mickey Mouse ice cream bar as it dripped down her hands. Joy chased her through Space Mountain and helped her score points with Buzz Lightyear’s help. Late that night, joy lit up the night sky much brighter than any fireworks ever could. As I watched her face in the glow of those fireworks I knew that, even if she didn’t know what word to assign to the emotion she was experiencing for the first time, I did.
After the fireworks ended, we made our way to the parking lot and took our place in line waiting for a bus back to our resort. We had been in line for a few minutes when I felt a tug at my shirt and turned to see her quietly crying next to me. I quickly bent down to her level and asked her what was wrong as I brushed the tears off her face only to hear her say words that made my heart soar:
“I think this is what joy must feel like.”
Critics might say that a parking lot is the unlikeliest of places for Disney magic to happen but they don’t know what you and I know – that the real magic of Disney isn’t found on Main Street or in a gift shop or even on any ride in the parks. The true magic of Disney is what happens inside of you when wonder and hope begin to take root and you start to believe that anything can happen with a little bit of magic.
Even joy.

Tim Jones with Ztrip of Pensacola was so attentive in making sure my son had a secure car seat. Mom fail- I assumed that the Ubers here would also have car seats (they don’t). So here I am…stranded at the airport with my two sons. I asked a police officer walking around the airport if he knew of a way for me to get a car seat somehow. He brought me out to the taxi cabs and asked drivers for me if anyone had a car seat.
This gentleman offered to go get one and come back and drive me to my location. THIS MAN DROVE AND BOUGHT ONE FROM WALMART. I SAW THE RECEIPT. He came back and MEASURED my son in the car seat prior to installing it… and then buckled him in. I asked if he needed help and he said “I learned this in grandpa school, and I just want your kids to be safe.”
WOW. You have blessed grandchildren sir. Thank you I’ll be calling his company personally to tell them what a great driver they have.

"Dear Husband,
I know I said I was going to clean the kitchen today. So you might be surprised when you get home and see the kitchen is in fact, not clean.
I'd love to offer an explanation --
First, I walked in to the kitchen with the sole intention of cleaning it. I picked up the hair brush and rubber bands off the kitchen table and walked to the bathroom to put them in the drawer.
While in the bathroom I noticed a pile of towels on the floor that had been laying there, fermenting for several days, so I grabbed the towels and headed to the laundry room.
Once there, I decided to go ahead and do a load since both hampers were spilling over and the room smelled like cat p*e and B.O. had a baby. I cranked the dials on the washer, shut the lid, and headed back to the original job: the kitchen.
But on my way to the kitchen I was sighted by Child B. A hangry Child B. The child and her whines followed me into the kitchen, where I promptly handed her a cheese stick and told her to go eat it in the garage (because the kitchen is being cleaned right now, obviously).
The sight of the child reminded me I hadn't emailed her teacher back yet about the Valentine's party, so I ran to the computer in our bedroom.
As I opened the computer, Child C rushed in screaming because his cape fell off. I fixed the cape, but didn't fix it the right way, so he immediately melted to the floor.
I carried Child C kicking and screaming to his room to calm down.
I walked out and shut the door, but immediately walked back in order to remove the cowboy boots so that when he inevitably started kicking the door, it wouldn't be scuffed.
Then, I headed back to the computer to ... what was I going to do? Fifteen minutes of Facebook later, I shut the computer.
Because, of course, I was in the middle of cleaning the kitchen.
I walked into the kitchen only to realize the oven clock showed it was time to pick up Child A from school.
So, no. It's not clean. Nothing is ever clean. My life is just a constant state of doing and never completing.
I just thought I'd let you know the situation, so you won't ask about the state of the kitchen.
Not that you ever would. 🙂
Love you forever,
Your Wife
P.S. Remind me to email Child B's teacher."

After Dad’s doctor’s appointment today we went to RiteAid to get a new rubber piece for his cane. We “argued” over which size was right, the 1-inch or the 3/4-inch. The clerk at the store giggled as she listened to us. I then said “well I’m sure the engineer must be right” and she said “That’s funny, as I watched him intensely calculate it, I thought he must be an engineer!” Yep, 88 years old and he can still do it.....and of course I picked the wrong one!
He went up to the cashier to pay and decided he wanted a Kit Kat bar too. He picked up a King Size one which I thought was strange for him, but I wasn’t going to question it. When I dropped him off at home, he quickly split the Kit Kat in half (I didn’t even see him do it!) and gave me half when I got in my car. He sweetly said “this is why I bought the big bar, in case you were wondering”.
I love my Lil’ Ol’ Man. We got this. 💙🥰
(PS....this is round #2 of head/neck cancer for him, so every crazy minute we spend together is priceless)

"I missed my first flight to LA yesterday and had to catch another. I was so upset, but now I know why! When I finally got to LAX baggage claim, I went to the bathroom to check my little makeup and I heard a woman crying so hard. I was wondering if I should say something like, 'It’s gonna be okay,' but I was nervous and she was speaking Spanish so I didn’t know if she’d even understand me. I left and came back to the bathroom like four times while I was waiting for my bags to come down (full flight), and I heard her say, 'But the bus doesn’t come until tomorrow.' My heart dropped, so I asked her if she had Zelle or CashApp. She said no. So I asked her if I could pay for a hotel until tomorrow and she stopped crying and opened the stall door AND I SAW THE SLEEPING KIDS. I felt so happy to help her, knowing I'd just be spending my little money on bullsh*t. She rode with me to the Marriott and I got her a room. I wanted to share this because I kept thinking, 'HOW MANY PEOPLE CAME INTO THE BATHROOM, HEARD HER CRYING FOR HOURS, DIDN'T KNOW THERE WERE KIDS, AND KEPT GOING?' I’m glad I said something because she was super sweet and appreciative and she had babies with her."

During last night's shift, Officer Cardin found this little bundle of fur hiding at the base of a lamppost at the corner of Florida Avenue and Pine Street. It was early in the shift so he brought her in, outfitted a records box and put her safely inside the kennel at the station.
But, the little cutie caught the eye (and heart) of Sgt Wallace. He didn't want her to be alone all night, so he scooped her up and kept her with him throughout the shift. She seemed to take to her new role as partner to Sgt Wallace, however, she did fall asleep her first night on the job.
We think all is forgiven as she now has a new home with her partner Sgt. Wallace. Congratulations to little feline officer Kelsey on her new loving home.

Photographer Tony Austin recently captured an extraordinary moment during a 3-hour nature walk. As a murder of crows landed nearby, one of the crows caught his attention with its unusual behavior. Curious, Tony started taking photos—and what he documented was fascinating!

The crow was “anting,” a unique behavior where birds land on anthills, letting ants crawl through their feathers. The ants release formic acid, which acts as a natural insecticide, fungicide, and bactericide—helping the birds rid themselves of harmful pathogens. Nature’s self-care routine at its finest! 🐦🐜✨

Ever heard of a rock formation so intriguing that it seems out of this world? Meet the Devil's Tower National Monument, a geological marvel that shoots straight out of the prairies surrounding the Black Hills. But here's the weird part: no one knows for certain how it formed. While geologists have theories, ranging from volcanic activity to erosion, indigenous legends tell a different story, describing a giant bear clawing at the rock to create its unique, column-like ridges. Whether a natural phenomenon or the stuff of tales, this mysterious monolith continues to captivate and mystify visitors from all corners of the globe.

Having spent over 40 yrs on this earth and having a fairly decent understanding and interest in and of the fairly mundane nature of the UK (compared to other parts of the world) I found out something a few years back that completley surprised me... earthworms pull leaves into the soil. They dont rely on decay, thwy actively grab leaves and pull them down into the soil.
I was out blowing the leaves off my garden lawn last week and there were dozens of leaves tubularly pulled into the soil. Similar to the below photo.
I knew they were good composters, but actively pulling vegetation into the soil for processing really surprised me.
No bananas

I serve as a manager at the Hanford Grocery Outlet, where we frequently encounter a customer named Zeke, who, if I recall correctly, sells tamales to our employees to support himself. His tamales are, in fact, quite delicious. Today, however, someone reported him to the police. Upon their arrival, all the employees, along with the owner, Jared, expressed their support for Zeke, emphasizing his character as a kind and good individual. The officers then decided to allow Zeke to select some groceries, which they would purchase for him. Witnessing this act of generosity, other customers also stepped in to assist Zeke and his family by contributing to the grocery bill. Such acts of kindness are performed not for recognition, but simply because they are the right thing to do. Kudos to the Hanford Police Department and the compassionate customers of Hanford Grocery Outlet!
