Twenty-five years ago today, nearly 3,000 people were killed in a single morning.

Firefighters who ran toward the towers instead of away from them. Office workers who never made it home. Passengers on four flights who called loved ones in their final minutes.

"We're too quick to cover up or forget about history," says Mark Antal, part of Task Force Antal's leadership. "History is there for us to remember, to see what went wrong, where we can improve, and to keep going."

Today is not about what came after. It is about the people who were lost, and the families who have carried that loss for twenty-five years.

We remember them.

Task Force Antal was founded by Veterans who served in the Global War on Terror.

Headquartered in New York City, the city where the war's opening chapter was written.

That service did not end when they came home. It found a new direction.

"We have to take the skills we have now," says Mark Antal, part of Task Force Antal's leadership, "and use them to train, or do whatever we can to help and stop stuff like this from happening again."

Special Operations Veterans who once fought in that war now bring the same precision and discipline to protecting civilian life in Ukraine.

The commitment that started decades ago has not stopped.

It just changed shape.

Four days after a Russian missile struck Chornomorets Stadium in Odesa, Task Force Antal's Special Operations Veterans walked back through its doors. Not a single window had survived. Repairs were already underway. Fifty people were working on the problem, because in Odesa right now, that is the only option anyone considers.

The room was quiet when the training began. SeaSters players, staff, and junior athletes, still carrying the weight of what had happened days before. But something shifted as the class went on. Tourniquets. Wound packing. Questions. Laughter. Candy passed around a conference room that had started the afternoon in silence.

One team member later explained why the timing mattered so much. Since the attack, the younger athletes had a new sense of their own mortality, something they had not carried before. What they needed was not just the skill to act if something happened again. They needed a few hours of normal. Attention. Encouragement. People showing up.

"You have always been here for us," one SeaSters staff member said. "You are part of our community now."

That may be the truest description of what this mission actually is.

When Task Force Antal's Special Operations Veterans arrive in a new community, the first conversations are always about trust.

Who are these people.

Why are they here.

What will they leave behind.

And then, almost without exception, comes the question that drives everything.

"When can we start?"

Communities living close to conflict do not need to be convinced that preparedness matters. They already know.

What these Veterans bring is not motivation.

It is the tools, the training, and the people to make readiness possible.

Chornomorets Stadium, home to FC SeaSters, can hold more than 34,000 people. Today, a Russian strike tore through its roof.

This isn’t just a stadium. It’s where dreams are built, where a women’s professional soccer team competes, and where the next generation finds hope through the game they love.

Through its partnership with FC SeaSters, Task Force Antal’s Special Operations Veterans use the same discipline they once brought to combat to train girls and professional players in lifesaving skills, including how to stop severe bleeding and pack a wound. Donor support also provides the cleats and jerseys they need, replacing worn-out gear with equipment that reflects their determination.

The stadium is damaged, but the people who fill it with purpose remain.

The mission continues.

Yesterday, a missile hit the building next door to where a Task Force Antal team member was staying in Lviv. It did not detonate, but the impact alone was enough to cause serious damage across the block.

Two residential buildings on Patona and Vyhovskoho Streets took the worst of it. By morning, more than 30 people had been injured.

Rescue crews worked through the dark, pulling people from the rubble. A 93-year-old woman, alone in her top-floor flat. A father and his six-year-old son, trapped together on the fourth floor. A blind man who ran out barefoot, his wife right behind him, guided to safety by neighbors.

By sunrise, our team member was outside with the neighbors, helping clear debris from the street they had come to Ukraine to serve.

This is what Task Force Antal's presence in Ukraine actually looks like. Not distant from the conflict.

Standing in the middle of it, choosing to stay anyway.

Not as a symbol.
As a practical necessity for the communities they return to.

A trained civilian without a kit is a person who knows what to do but cannot do it.
