CodeInspire Code Inspire is a 501(c)(3) tech education nonprofit. We focus on making coding education accessible to all kids (ages 5 to 13 years old)!

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, we bring critical coding and technology-based education to K-8th grade students typically without access to computer science education including Black, Hispanic, Native+, and female students. We provide fun and educational coding and robotics classes to inspire, motivate, and encourage kids to learn critical skills for the future. By improving teaching kids the fundamenta

ls of coding, we improve confidence, increase computer literacy, and potentially inspire them to pursue higher level education and careers in the tech ecosystem. Ideally, Code Inspire serves as a starting point for kids to pursue their interests with confidence and technological skills much needed for the future! Our Goals:
• Increase interest in coding among Black, Hispanic, and female students typically not able to access coding education
• Educate and inspire students (Age 5-13) through hands-on learning and mastery of coding fundamentals

It is abundantly clear that we live in a digital world. The way that your children navigate the digital world depends completely on their digital literacy. Digital literacy refers to one’s ability to find, evaluate, and communicate information on the internet. The ability to analyze information and communicate responsibly is vital in our ever changing technologically-dependent world. By learning computer proficiency at a young age, it makes it significantly easier for children to use the internet responsibility and have strong digital literacy.

Across the United States, only 51% of public high schools offer foundational computer science in their curriculum.
While 39 states have policies that enforce the inclusion of computer science in the education system, many students still aren’t receiving the necessary education that they deserve. The rate of jobs in the computing field are expected to grow faster than all other occupations between now and 2026. By prioritizing the teaching of computer science now, it can be ensured that all students are prepared for the numerous paths that life may take them on.

Lua is one of the lead scripting languages used in video game making today. Roblox uses its own special version of Lua called Roblox Lua, which allows kids to be able to create and program their own environments and games. The language was developed to make it easy for anyone to understand, which is why it is easy for kids to learn it and let their imaginations run wild!

Using Roblox Studio software, students can learn the fundamentals of game design and coding. They’ll exercise their creative muscles, master game creation, and advance to learning Lua.

It has been a very busy four weeks at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Newark, New Jersey. So far, we have spent everyday having STEM-filled fun! First, they learned how to program in Scratch and make their own animated stories. Secondly, they learned to make their own 3D games in Kodu. They have also become tiny engineers and are making awesome moving creations with legos! For our last two weeks, we are learning how to “hack” in Minecraft Education Edition by using the Code Editor feature. Overall, our students are loving STEM and sad to see the end of the camp in August.

Due to our generous donors, CodeInspire can continue to support our students, in-person and online classes, instructors, and camps just like this one! If you or your company is interested in donating for a difference, please check out our website!

❓What do you enjoy most about being an instructor?
The most beautiful thing for me is to transmit my passion and knowledge to kids that in the future will help our community.

❓When and why did you become interested in coding?
I became interested in coding when I was 14 years old and I learned how to program a microprocessor with different circuits.

❓What do you enjoy most about being an instructor?
My favorite thing about being an instructor is watching students learn and apply concepts they’ve learned in class to their projects. It’s so rewarding to see the moment the information clicks for a student, and they go on to apply it to their code in creative ways. That’s something that never gets old.

❓Can you share a time when a student had a breakthrough in class?
In one of my Action Scratch classes, a student had trouble making a basketball appear to go into a hoop. She asked me for help, and I used relatable real-world scenarios to explain the concept we covered in class. When she finally understood it and watched the basketball travel into the hoop, she jumped up from her seat, shouted joyfully, and quickly showed her friends. When I returned to her later in the class, the student had done a whole new project using the same concepts to make her own animation.

“Whether you want to uncover the secrets of the universe or you just want to pursue a career, basic computer programming is an essential skill to learn.” -Stephen Hawking

In a world that’s so dependent on technology; educators, parents, and researchers have started embracing the possibilities that coding can bring for kids – not just in the classroom, but across the curriculum and into their futures. Because of this, Code Inspire aims to make sure that no child is deprived of equal access to learning, valuable skills, and opportunities.

❓What do you enjoy most about being an instructor?
The thing I enjoy the most about being an instructor is that all the students I teach are interested in topics that go deeper than our curriculum. Festering a love for technology and coding at a young age can really help these students thrive and be very successful in their futures.

❓What is your favorite thing to teach and why?
My favorite thing to teach is our Minecraft Harry Potter courses. We teach it in Minecraft education edition, which allows accessible forms of mod coding ingame for kids of all ages. For our younger kids, it allows them to drag and drop block code, but learn the basic principles of coding. For our older kids, it lets them learn to code in JavaScript! It is my favorite because it allows for anyone to be able to use the program and do anything with it. At the end of the lessons, the kids come up with so many funny additions to the game and I love to see the creativity that their minds hold!
