This 45-inch American Sycamore (Platanus occidentalis) is a stunning tree. The lower trunk has small, dark grey plates. As your eyes move up the trunk, the bark transitions to smooth, white and light grey skin. This species is one of the parents of the London Plane tree (Platanus x hispanics formerly P. x acerifolia which was an ID clue: maple like leaf). The leaves of the Sycamore and Plane tree are similar. In addition to the bark skin characteristics, you can potentially distinguish the Sycamore from the Plane by examining their fruit. It is said that Sycamores bear their fruit singly (1 seedball per fruit stem) while Plane tree has a pair of fruit per stem. Visit this Sycamore; the tree id # is 1533562 on the NYC Parks Tree Map.

🦉 Whooo knows about owl etiquette?

This past weekend, a Barred Owl was spotted in Central Park. With lush landscapes and a robust ecosystem, the Park offers a refuge with plenty of food and shelter, and it’s our job to ensure these delicate birds and Park visitors can coexist peacefully. 💚

Be sure to follow these simple steps to support these creatures’ health and wellbeing:

🪶 Maintain a respectful distance

🪶 Be as quiet as possible, especially during the daytime when owls are resting

🪶 Avoid sudden movements

🪶 Keep dogs on leash

If you’re ever concerned about wildlife’s safety, please let a Central Park Conservancy staff member know or contact the Urban Park Rangers via 311. We’re owl in this together!

There are millions of trees and over 200 species in New York City. Join us to learn how these different species are able to thrive in a harsh urban environment. During this walk we will learn how to recognize different trees by their leaves as well as their bark. We will also visit trees that are locally evolved to this land and trees that have been introduced at different points in history.
