Celebrating Emily Shooltz and the June Anne Baker Prize 25th Anniversary

PlayGround will honor four theatre luminaries at our annual four-city gala on Monday, September 14th. In conjunction with the 25th anniversary of PlayGround’s June Anne Baker Prize, one of the nation’s longest-running play commissions dedicated to the next generation of promising women/non-binary playwrights, PlayGround will recognize significant theatre artists and producers who have elevated womxn playwrights and stories throughout their careers:

Margo Hall, Lorraine Hansbury Theatre (San Francisco)
Jessica Kubzansky, Boston Court Pasadena (Los Angeles)
Emily Shooltz, Signature Theatre (New York)
Ericka Ratcliff, Chicago Shakespeare Theater (Chicago).

The 2026 June Anne Baker Prize winners are Esther Banegas Gatica (PlayGround-Los Angeles), KT Frances Hartline (PlayGround-SF), Uma Incrocci (PlayGround-NY), and Toby Inoue (PlayGround-CH). The Gala honorary committee includes June Anne Baker Prize alumni Lauren Yee and Geetha Reddy (honorary co-chairs), as well as Rachel Bublitz, Patricia Cotter, Laura Domingo, Brady Lea, Alanna McFall, Erin Marie Panttaja, Evelyn Jean Pine, Bridgette Dutta Portman, and Kimberly Ridgeway.

PlayGround closes out the summer season with the fifth annual FREE-PLAY FESTIVAL! This four-week “fringe style” new works festival features 21 productions and 61 performances by talented theatre artists from across the country including PlayGround artists based in the Bay Area, Los Angeles, New York and Chicago.

REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS
PlayGround invites submission of proposals for the 10th annual PlayGround Solo Performance Festival, to take place at PlayGround’s San Francisco venue, Potrero Stage, with live online simulcast, January 15-February 7, 2027. PlayGround is interested in diverse voices and approaches, including storytelling, clowning, music, dance, multimedia, comedy, etc. In addition to new works by individual writer-performers, we are also interested in collaborations between separate writers and performers as well as adaptations of existing material in the public domain, historical biographies and/or historical events. BIPOC, trans/gender-nonconforming, and artists with disabilities encouraged to apply. Running time for proposed pieces can be up to 50 minutes without intermission.

Applications are now being accepted for PlayGround’s first annual TWISTED HOLIDAY FESTIVAL, November 27-December 20, at Potrero Stage and simulcast.

- Four-week “fringe style” new works festival
- Up to 20 productions and 60 performances
- New holiday-themed works (with a twist!)

PlayGround’s Twisted Holiday Festival welcomes applications from seasoned theatre professionals, first-time producers, and all-star performers in every aspect of live performance, direction, and choreography. Productions will be presented for 3 performances at Potrero Stage (18th Street @ Arkansas),

All productions are simulcast get three HD recordings of their show!
