THE SITUATION OF WOMEN AND CHILDREN IN AFRICA
Women and children in rural communities in Africa, especially Cameroon, urgently need the attention of the international community. Rural women, children and girls are victims of torture, gender discrimination, illiteracy and limited access to medical care. The situation is further worsened by poverty, r**e, armed conflct and food shortages that abound in many parts of the continent. All of these - the causes and consequences alike - are addressed in the core objectives of MOTHER AFRICA INTERNATIONAL Inc.
A few cases could be highlighted here. Pre-, ante- and post-natal medical attention are aspects of reproductive health that are still a luxury in African countries. In their stead there are traditional birth attendants whose methods constitute significant health risks. This partly accounts for the alarming numbers of women that die in child birth.
Other forms of abuse such as marital r**e, torture, FGM, and the trafficking and exploitation of prostitution, are also noticeable especially in Sub Saharan Africa.
The children have their own share of the challenges. The prevalence of childhood diseases such as diarrhoea, cholera, malaria, pneumonia and malnutrition, further compounds the horrible condition of the African family. Before they are fourteen, the likelihood is that they will be forced to farm and peddle to help support the family.
