Joy Tamayo, Soprano.

As a Filipino, how did you start as an artist in the US?

I came here in the US for my masters in music degree with a major in vocal performance and paved the way from there.

What are the opportunities and challenges, and in particular as a female/male artist of a minority group?

I’ve experienced a lot of nourishment from the sheer number of artistic ecosystems that I sought to be a part of in NYC. During my early years of auditioning and search for work, I realized how important it is to join projects that embrace as much diversity and richness of culture available for immigrant artists. The challenges are perhaps the same as in any society that progressively devalues creativity.
