❗️Introducing the final member of our International Concerto Competition jury:

Pianist Robert Grohman has been praised for his artistry and musical sensitivity and enjoys a career as a soloist, chamber musician, teacher, and administrator. The New York Times critic James Oestreich wrote of one Carnegie Hall performance, “Grohman stood out among the players.” Grohman has performed in several venues in each of Vienna, Washington, D.C., and New York City, and appeared as a soloist with the Vienna International Orchestra, where his original cadenza for Mozart’s Piano Concerto K.467 was hailed by conductor Robert Lehrbaumer as “the best cadenza for this concerto that I’ve ever heard.” He has collaborated with Latin Grammy Award-winner Pedro Giraudo and the American Repertory Ballet at State Theater New Jersey. Other performances include solo recitals at Rutgers University and other venues around New Jersey. He also performed live on Chicago’s WFMT Radio, and was the piano teacher for Jessica Chastain in The Zookeeper’s Wife, as well as musical consultant to director Nikki Caro for the film.

Grohman’s article “Not the Slightest Reverberation: Did Mozart’s Fortepiano Lack Knee Levers?” was published in the Journal of Music Research from the National Taiwan Normal University. He has presented at conferences of the Historical Keyboard Society of North America, Rutgers University Musicological Society, and Vienna ConcertoFest.

Mr. Grohman received a DMA from Rutgers University, where he was awarded the Irene Alm Memorial Prize, the Music Department Award for excellence in performance, and the Rutgers Seminar Paper Prize. He previously studied at the Mannes College of Music, Manhattan School of Music, NJPAC, University for Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, and Northwestern University, where he earned both a BM and BA degree in Mathematics. He is an Assistant Teaching Professor at Rutgers, where he teaches applied piano and piano literature and where he serves as Graduate Coordinator and Piano Area Coordinator.

Introducing our PMF International Concerto Competition jury:

Michael Shirtz is a performer, educator, composer, and conductor whose work bridges jazz, contemporary, and classical music. He has collaborated with artists including Melissa Manchester, Evelyn Wright, Elizabeth von Trapp, and served as music director for Maureen McGovern. His original shows include As We’ve Learned It, In Finding Faith, and Blue Skies (2018).

Shirtz has conducted, coached, and directed productions for organizations such as the State Theatre Repertory Company, Huron Playhouse, Pellissippi State-Knoxville, and Lakeside Chautauqua, and has worked with the Firelands Symphony Orchestra. His compositions include the cantata The Solemn Blessings, the musical Headliner, and To Rise Above: A Journey of a Tuskegee Airman. In June 2026, he will make his Carnegie Hall debut conducting Fauré’s Requiem.

❓Why apply to PMF Concerto Competition?

Because this is more than an online competition.
It’s a real performance experience.

Finalists take the stage in a live round set on June 29th in the inspiring surroundings of the Berkshires, with judges present and fellow musicians around them, creating an atmosphere that plays a vital role in the development of a young artist and expands their musical world through real experience.

It’s also where connections begin, as young pianists meet peers and form lasting friendships.
🥇And for our top winners, the journey continues beyond the stage:
Concerto Competition Grand Prize winners receive a paid trip to Rome, where they will perform with a string quartet/chamber orchestra, an unforgettable international debut.

Exciting opportunities await young pianists💫

Deadline: May 15
