Congratulations and good luck — and belated Happy Birthday (May 27)! — are in order for EcoAthletes Champion and Oregon State Senior rower Isabella Mitchell!

Congrats on leading OSU to the win in the 2026 EcoAthletes Collegiate Cup Powered by Protect Where We Play! Isabella, who joined the Champions network only a month or so before the March kickoff of the 4th annual competition that converts exercise into beach and ocean cleanup. Despite being a Cup rookie, she dive into recruiting teammates and family members to sign up for Oregon State. Once her squad was built, she made sure team members recorded their exercise on the Climategames app throughout the 6-week competition. The Beavers took the lead in week 1 and thanks to Bella, exercising more than 48 other schools, generating 419 of the 2,000 pounds of beach waste cleanup!

And good luck Isabella and your fellow Oregon State rowers — Champions of the West Coast Conference — at this weekend’s NCAA championships on Lake Lanier, GA.

Following the NCAAs and graduation, Isabella plans to begin a career focused on climate advocacy.

“I’ve always believed that an individual can make a difference,” she asserted, “And appreciating the environment was how I was raised. I am excited to dedicate my life to combining these two elements by creating policy that drives positive climate action and encourages more people to become environmental activists.”

Go, Isabella, GO!!!

Happy Birthday — and welcome to the EcoAthletes Champions roster! — University of Miami rower Sophia Philipp!!

The rising senior dove headfirst into her role as a Champion, leading Miami to a top 5 finish in its inaugural EcoAthletes Collegiate Cup Powered by Protect Where We Play.

“The Collegiate Cup was a great way to get Miami student-athletes and our friends and family to take climate action by converting our exercise into beach cleanup,” explained Sophia. “Getting ‘The Miami Hurricane’ to cover our Collegiate Cup campaign helped our recruiting efforts and built enthusiasm among our Cuppers! We can’t wait to build on what we started when it comes to next year’s Cup — we’re going for the win!!!”

With Sophia leading ‘The U’s’ 2027 Cup charge we have no doubt that Miami will give this year’s winner Oregon State a run for its money…which will of course benefit the climate comeback!

But that’s for 2027; for today we say have a great birthday Sophia!!!

Welcome to the EcoAthletes Champions network — and HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! — to University of New Hampshire swimmer Maddie Serfass! Her sport opened the door to her passion for climate action.

“As a swimmer, I have seen the direct impacts of climate change up close,” she shared. “Summer’s rising temperatures have made it too hot to swim outside due to the risk of dehydration and other heat-related illnesses. Some of my fondest memories are from swimming outside during the summer so, it saddens me to know that future swimmers may not get to enjoy those same experiences because of extreme heat.”

She is committed to using her platform as an EcoAthletes Champions network to spark a climate comeback at UNH.

“As a member of the UNH Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), I plan to use that platform to create spaces where athletes can comfortably talk about and strategize plans for climate action,” noted the rising junior. “A dual major in marine biology and sustainability, I am excited about working to make UNH greener for athletes, fans, students, and our entire community. Go Wildcats!”

Go Wildcats, Go Maddie and Happy Birthday!

EcoAthletes is excited to welcome retired Olympic and 2X Asian Champion swimmer Naoko Imoto to the Champions network on her birthday!!! Her passion for climate action grew after her elite swimming career ended.

“After retirement I worked for 20 years in developing countries, 15 of those with UNICEF,” she noted. “I witnessed the lives of those who produce minimal carbon emissions but who suffer disasters fueled by extreme weather. I could not stay still when I know that the current generation is deferring the costs and consequences of climate change to our successors.”

Climate change also is impacting her sport.

“Today, schools in Japan prohibit swimming classes due to extreme heat,” said EcoAthletes’ first Champion from the Far East. “We can’t play outdoors from June to September and rural school gyms don’t have air conditioning so indoor exercise is also declining.”

Naoko looked at the impacts of climate change and decided to act.

“I launched an athlete group in Japan to drive climate action after I met [EcoAthletes Champions] Melissa Wilson, Jeremy Casebeer, and Hannah Mills at the 2022 Sport Positive Summit,” Naoko said. “It has since grown to a group of 20-30 elite athletes. Some of them are doing really cool and effective stuff! Becoming an EcoAthletes Champion will allow me to connect them to athletes around the world to increase their…OUR…influence.”

“Arrigato” Naoko for joining our movement and for bringing your team of climate comebackers from Japan to the party. In the meantime, have a great birthday!!!

Welcome to the EcoAthletes Champions network and Happy Birthday to James Dodman, Columbia University rower (‘28)! His passion for climate action has deep roots.

“Much of my childhood was spent outdoors, playing team sports, mountain biking, or skiing,” he shared. “That inspired my interest in sustainable energy and that sparked my passion to want to drive environmental action.”

His early days as a rower also served to amp up his interest in the climate comeback.

“When I started rowing, I didn’t realize how weather dependent the sport is,” offered Columbia’s first ever EcoAthletes Champion. “High wind speeds or heavy downpours often impacted our trainings. A big reason I decided to attend Columbia was their spring training was its spring rowing camp at Lake Lure in North Carolina. It was nearly destroyed in 2024 by Hurricane Helene, from which the area is still recovering. Seeing that impact first hand — and seeing more devastating extreme weather events via news reports — made climate change feel immediate. And it is why I want to use my platform as an athlete to lead climate action at Columbia as an EcoAthletes Champion!”

We are stoked to have you onboard the Champions roster, James! Have a very happy birthday!!

Welcome Ukaleq Slettemark, world class biathlete, EcoAthletes first ever Champion from Greenland 🇬🇱!!! Her homeland, greatly impacted by climate change, shapes her climate advocacy.

“In Greenland, we see ourselves as connected to nature,” Ukaleq asserted. “As a winter sports athlete, climate change is something I see with my own eyes. In warmer, less predictable winters, changing snow conditions, we have to work that much harder and expend more energy just to keep winter sports possible. In biathlon and other winter sports, we are already adapting to conditions that used to be more stable.”

With this new reality, Ukaleq realized she could either sit on the sidelines or try to forge a climate comeback. She has chosen the latter course!

“I realize that while many winter sports athletes see climate changes very clearly, we do not always have the tools, network, or confidence to speak up and create action,” Ukaleq observed. “I know that growing the awareness of sustainability in sport is important. But that is not nearly enough! I want to help make climate conversations more common among athletes and our fans, connect sport with real action, and be part of the movement to make better choices around the way we organize events, travel, consume, and tell stories! That’s why I decided to become an EcoAthletes Champion!”

We are so glad you did and can’t wait to work with you to drive the climate comeback in Greenland and beyond!

For Jacquie Pierri — Team Italy 🇮🇹 Olympic ice hockey player, EcoAthletes Champion, and environmental engineer — this was an amazing Week That Was on her visit to her native New Jersey!

It kicked off with her induction to the New Jersey High School Ice Hockey Hall of Fame — the first image shows Montclair NJ native Jacquie with her mom and grandma at the induction ceremony.

Then Jacquie met with EcoAthletes CEO Lew Blaustein, displaying the bronze medal Team Italia earned at the recent Division 1A world championships and Italian league championship medal she won with her Bolzano Eagles. She also brought her Italy 🇮🇹 Olympic uniform for Lew to sign on behalf of EcoAthletes and the climate comeback!

We thank Jacquie, the first ever EcoAthletes Champion of The Month (March 2026)) for her consistent climate comeback leadership on and off the ice and can’t wait to see what’s next. AUGURRI Jacquie é GRAZIE MILLE!!!

Welcome pro soccer player in France, Rachel Corboz, to the EcoAthletes Champions network…and it’s her BIRTHDAY!!! Joyeux anniversaire, Rachel!

Having grown up in an outdoorsy family, the Georgetown alum has always been climate-focused. That has only heightened since she became a pro footballer.

“As a pro footballer I’ve directly experienced climate change, whether through heat waves or droughts impacting training conditions, or through drastic temperature swings from one day to the next,” she opined. “We have a powerful platform and we must use it to raise awareness, and even more importantly to mitigate and adapt.”

Rachel is not just talking the talk; she’s also walking the climate action walk, pursuing a PhD at the University of Paris-Saclay, all while pursuing Champions League football. ⚽️

“My PhD centers in environmental sustainability in French football,” recounted Rachel. “Specifically my research delves into to how and why clubs adopt environmental practices and what pressures influence those initiatives. I am particularly interested in seeing which practices actually work and lead to real positive environmental impact.”

ALLEZ ALLEZ Rachel, on the pitch and with your dissertation— we can’t wait to learn from it. In the meantime, enjoy your birthday celebration!!!
