The International Court of Justice’s interim ruling on January 26, 2024, is an important step towards deescalating the terrible violence that Israel has unleashed on the people of Gaza since October 2023. However, ICJ intervened only because South Africa filed a case against Israel, accusing it of genocidal acts. South Africa, a nation that has lived through apartheid, stepped up in solidarity with the Palestinian people. Despite the support of the world’s most powerful nations, Israel must now be held accountable before the whole world. This act of support and solidarity, realized through the ICJ, is a lesson for all changemakers of how we can be more powerful together. Israeli Seed and GATHER member Lior Amihai is the Executive Director of Peace Now, an Israeli NGO that advocates for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Lior has been a part of movements focused on conflict resolution, especially between Israelis and Palestinians, for much of his career.
Regarding his current work at Peace Now, he says that “the biggest challenge is to get the Israeli public—a chunk of which thinks of itself as liberal—to act. We want them to stop being afraid of the idea of ending occupation, and mobilize them to take decisive steps.”
Lior believes that it is important to be part of a political community of people with shared values who want progress and equality for everyone and with whom you can share your struggles. As he puts it, “Community gives hope.”
For Lior, the Seeds of Peace Camp was the first of many eye-opening experiences.
Lior firmly believes that everyone needs to be civically engaged. “If you are an engaged political citizen, you are in a position of privilege and can do a lot. That is something that helps in dealing with despair and struggles—knowing that you are actually doing something!”

The International Day of Peace recognises the urgent need for peace in our world today more than ever through observing 24 hours of non-violence and cease fire. The theme for this year is Actions for Peace: Our Ambition for the .
Peace is a dream achievable with the right intentions and waking up every day with optimism and commitment to help build a world where we defend knowledge and curiosity against hate. Where conscious decisions help create safe and inclusive spaces for all. And where we help tackle the devastation unleashed by war and conflict. It is a call to action that recognizes our individual and collective responsibility to foster peace.
Today, on the International Day of Peace, we asked some of our GATHER members Daniel Arzola Danielle Whyte Shivani Desai Kamal Almashharawi Katia Beasan Shira Z. Carmel Urmi Chanda from Palestine, India, Israel, and the United States whether they think that peace is a distant dream or a close reality.
