The Denyce Graves Foundation proudly congratulates Generational Voices fellow David Morgans on being named an Artist in Residence with Opera San José!

Based in the heart of Silicon Valley, Opera San José is home to a resident company of artists and presents four mainstage productions annually at the historic California Theatre.

We’re excited to announce Voices Forward, a new collaborative vocal arts residency from The Denyce Graves Foundation and Virginia Opera!

Taking place October 30–November 1 in Norfolk, Virginia, the three-day residency will bring emerging singers together with educators and industry professionals for performance, mentorship, professional development, and community engagement.

Building on DGF’s Generational Voices initiative, the residency will culminate in a special concert at the Harrison Opera House on November 1 at 2:30 PM, featuring Generational Voices fellows alongside the Norfolk State University Concert Choir, members of the Virginia Opera Chorus, and the Virginia Symphony Orchestra.

A week later, we’re still thinking and reflecting on the Harvest Moon Gala.

More than a celebration, the evening was a reminder of why we do this work: preserving history, supporting artists, and building a future for classical vocal arts.

To every artist, honoree, supporter, and friend who makes this work possible, thank you.

The gala may be over, but the work continues.

“I want children to have that encouragement and that sense of belonging from the beginning.” — Misty Copeland

At this year’s Harvest Moon Gala, The Denyce Graves Foundation honored Misty Copeland with the inaugural Mary Cardwell Dawson Humanitarian Award, an award that represents the power of representation, mentorship, and knowing the artists who came before us.

In her acceptance speech, Copeland shared the story of discovering her own mentor, Raven Wilkinson, the first Black Woman to dance with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. Misty spoke about how that relationship gave her a deeper sense of belonging in ballet—and ultimately inspired a responsibility and purpose that extended beyond her own career.

Her words beautifully captured the spirit of the evening and the work at the heart of the Denyce Graves Foundation: honoring those who came before us while ensuring the next generation of artists knows that they, too, belong in this history. Congratulations, Misty, and thank you for continuing to make the path wider for those who follow.

What a night! This years Harvest Moon Gala brought together an extraordinary community of artists, supporters, friends, and leaders for an unforgettable evening in support of the Denyce Graves Foundation.

From inspiring performances and meaningful moments honoring Misty Copeland, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, and Ann Ziff, the evening was a beautiful reminder of what is possible when we come together to celebrate artistic excellence, preserve legacy, and invest in the generations to come.

To everyone who joined us, supported our work, and helped make this sold-out evening possible: thank you. Your support allows us to continue creating opportunities for artists and ensuring that their voices, stories, and contributions endure.

Heading into the weekend, we’re looking back at last weekend’s Shared Voices Fusion Concert, the grand finale of the 5th Annual Shared Voices Symposium!

Presented in collaboration with the Morehouse College Glee Club, the program moved through opera, jazz, musical theatre, and spirituals, showcasing the versatility and artistry of our Shared Voices cohort artists.

What a way to close an incredible weekend of music, learning, and community.

That’s a wrap on the 5th Annual Denyce Graves Foundation’s Shared Voices Symposium!

A special thank you to The Morehouse College, The Ray Charles Performing Arts Center, and Rev. Dr. Kelly Smith Jr. of Friendship Baptist Church for partnering with us to bring this year’s symposium to Atlanta.

Thank you to our attendees, administrators, clinicians, artists, partners, faculty mentors, and everyone who contributed their time, expertise, and artistry to making this year’s symposium a success.

Day One of the Shared Voices Symposium is in the books!

Today featured industry insights with Michael J. Bobbitt, a conversation led by Dr. Karen Bryan on expanding pathways into classical music, an inspiring masterclass with Talise Trevigne, and mock auditions with our incredible panelists Adam Turner, Alex Fletcher, Meredith Wallace, Chandler Johnson, Jessica Kiger, and Aundi Moore, and our fabulous pianist, Dr. Taylor Flowers!

Join us Saturday for Day Two, culminating in the Shared Voices Concert at 7 PM! All events are FREE and open to the public.
