This afternoon, we join the Uptown Kid Lit Festival, for Banned Books Workshop with Dr. Wesley Jacques, Ph.D., an educator and researcher of youth literature, media, and culture. He is a professor of literature at Wheaton College (MA), a reviewer for the Center for Children’s Book at University of Illinois, and a contributor to Slate Magazine

According to the American Library Association, book censorship has increased to unprecedented levels since 2021 in schools and libraries throughout the country. This targeted political effort to challenge and ban materials, from literary classics to new favorites that champion inclusivity, has impacted young peoples in their classrooms, their communities, and compromised their processes of identity development.

Dr. Jacques' session at Uptown Kid Lit. Festival will highlight current trends of book bans while imagining the kinds of enriching stories that need to be told, shared and taught regardless of opposition.

All ages welcome. (Children accompanied by adults.)
