Nathalie Lecorps and Karyn Glemaud just launched Boston’s first-ever Haitian food truck! It’s called Gourmet Kreyol and both cousins noted how excited they are to be serving the third-largest Haitian community in America.

Lecorps and Glemaud are of Haitian descent. Their parents were born and raised in Haiti and the name of the truck is named after Lecorp’s parent’s restaurant, which they owned in Miami for 22 years. The truck serves traditional Haitian dishes such as legume, griot, and chicken, both fried and stewed. Gourmet Kreyol operates two days a week, Thursdays and Fridays. Thursday’s food truck is located at Green Street in Jamaica Plain and on Friday’s it is outside the Boston Medical Center on Harrison Avenue. If you’re ever in Boston, stop by and support 🇭🇹

The International Center for Research on Women (ICRW) seeks to advance gender equity, social inclusion, and shared prosperity. Recently, ICRW, with the support of the Ford Foundation, undertook a learning review focusing on areas of programming for adolescent girls. Ultimately, the critical learnings from the study point to the need for comprehensive ecological approaches for engaging with adolescent girls to enhance their voice.

Based on the strategies that emerged from ICRW’s primary engagement with implementing organizations, in addition to ICRW’s review of evidence from other contexts - they were able to recommend key principles for programs working with adolescents to implement during creation, ex*****on, and measurement processes. This year’s theme for International Day of the Midwife was “Follow the Data: Invest in Midwives.” Due to continued support, is able to join forces with Haitian Midwife partners to advocate for investment in quality midwifery care and improve sexual, reproductive, maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent care in Haiti.

The 2021 State of the World’s Midwifery (SoWMy) Report was also released on May 5th (International Day of the Midwife) and it provides a detailed analysis on the impact of midwives on maternal and newborn health outcomes, along with the return on investment in midwives.

Celebrate a midwife by checking out FAHM’s t-shirts! Your purchase will fund the education, outreach, and leadership development for midwives practicing in Haiti. The link is in our bio.

Even though Haiti has a female population of about 5.6 million out of 11.1 million, women continue to suffer the detrimental effects of gender biases and social norms as they do not reach the same educational and professional success that men do. However, HWC’s member organizations among a number of organizations, such as WomenOne,  are promoting the education and empowerment of Haitian women and girls.

WomenOne is a nonprofit organization with the goal of “connecting women and girls in need around the world to other women who had the energy and resources to support them.” Through research, it was found that educated mothers are more than twice as likely to send their children to school. That is why worked with buildOn to construct a primary school in Berard, Haiti.

Haiti is beginning to make great strides in terms of providing education and empowering Haitian women. This is partly due to nonprofits fighting to ensure gender equality so that women can progress, advance and lift themselves out of poverty.
