🚨New podcast alert🚨 AATSP Podcast: The Importance of Study Abroad Podcast

In this episode, our Podcast Committee invited two of our dear friends and collaborators; Leslie Gale, Executive Director of Xperitas, and Jeff Scott Wells of Carlos V Education. Our host, Dr. Alan Hartman, Vice President of AATSP Metropolitan NY Chapter and Professor at Mercy University explored the transformative power of studying abroad. Drawing from their own experiences, all three educators reflected on how international immersion shaped their personal and professional journeys, and how these opportunities remain essential for language learners today.

Did you know? The AATSP was founded in New York City in 1917, making our NYC Metropolitan Chapter the oldest in the nation!

Throwing it back to February 1998 and our 25th Silver Anniversary Gala at the iconic New Yorker Hotel — a celebration that brought together passionate educators, scholars, and leaders in Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian studies. From keynote voices in journalism to powerful tributes to García Lorca, the day reflected what makes our Metro NY community so special: scholarship, cultura, and corazón.

Moments like these paved the way for the vibrant professional family we continue to grow today — most recently gathering for our 52nd Congreso Educativo in April 2025.

Here’s to honoring our legacy while inspiring the next generation of language educators. 💫

Aprenderemos a:

Francisco García-Quezada
Francisco García-Quezada, a longtime and deeply dedicated member of the AATSP, is a living example of the American Dream and a powerful testament to the life-changing impact of language educators. A first-generation college student, Francisco has devoted his career to supporting immigrant students and their families, ensuring they never face the challenges he once navigated alone. His work at the RBERN at the Center for Educational Partnerships at Fordham University’s Graduate School of Education has led to programs that uplift and empower multilingual learners. His life and service embody the mission and heart of the AATSP and offer a shining example of what it means to uplift students, families, and whole communities through language.
