Having an alleged German soldier during the Revolution can be an interesting conundrum. There are resources that can help in your determination, American and German.

A Revolutionary War ancestor can be a goldmine of information if you know where to look. This lecture aims to examine types of service, compiled military service records, pension applications, settled accounts, and where other documents can be found using a step-by-step methodology in a case study.

1:45 pm “German Units in the Revolutionary War”

This lecture aims to examine the types of German organizations on both sides of the war, from militia and state troops to the Continental Line on the American side and the German Auxiliaries in the employ of the British or Loyalist units raised in North America.

3:00 pm “Loyalists in the American Revolution”

Approximately one-third of the people living in the Colonies at the time of the Revolution were loyal to the King. During the War some fought in Loyalist units. By the end of the war, most were forced to leave, either north to Canada or back across the ocean. Many filed claims with the British government for

failing to protect them from the rebels. Learn about the records of their service and records of their time after the War.

Speaker Bio: Craig Roberts Scott, MA, CG, FUGA is the author of The ‘Lost Pensions’: Settled Accounts of the Act of 6 April 1838 (Revised) and Records of the Accounting Officers of the Department of the Treasury, Inventory 14 (Revised). His most recent work is Understanding Revolutionary War and Invalid Pension Ledgers, 1818 – 1872, and the Payment Vouchers They Represent. He has authored seventeen books and several articles in the National Genealogical Society Quarterly, the Magazine of Virginia Genealogy, and other genealogical publications. He is the President and CEO of Heritage Books, Inc., a genealogical publishing firm with over 10,000 titles in print. A professional genealogical and historical researcher for more than forty years, he specializes in military records, problem-solving, Quakers, and publishing. He is a Company of Military Historians member and on the National Genealogical Society Quarterly editorial board. He is a former Director of the Association of Professional Genealogists. He is the Vice-President of the APG Writer’s SIG. He has coordinated research tracks at the Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research, Samford University, the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy, and the Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh. He is currently their SLIG Guided Research and Consultation Track Coordinator, helping students solve brickwall problems. He is the host of the YouTube Genealogy channel. He is a recipient of the Grahame T. Smallwood, Jr. Award and the UGA Silver Tray Award. He became a Fellow of the Utah Genealogical Association in 2014.

The MAGS's 2026 Spring Conference and Workshop were held this past weekend (20-21 March) with terrific participation by members.
MAGS's own Bob Greiner kicked off the Workshop with an excellent hands-on presentation on Accessing Maryland Vital Records on the Reclaim the Records Website
and Searching Bremen, Germany Civil Records and More Online. On Saturday 21 March renowned genealogist Teresa Steinkamp McMillin gave a thoroughly enjoyable, easy to follow presentations on "Getting the Most from German Church Records,” “Get With the Times: Newspaper Research,” “Adapt, Improvise and Overcome: Explore German Military Records,” “Case Studies Illustrate Finding German Origins.”
As usual, this was a thoroughly rewarding Workshop and Conference, and not one to have missed.
