De-militarizing Youth

De-militarizing Youth This is the DMY: De-militarizing Youth public page for defining and revealing the war against our youth!

An escalating presence of corporate and military influence is being seen in our public schools as districts struggle to fund teachers and classrooms. De-militarizing Youth seeks to broaden the awareness of this crisis and to bring allies to our cause to spread the word that citizens can stand against this trend.

January 12, 2026 / Natasha Souza / NNOMY - The military was part of my life long before I was old enough to understand what war meant.

My father served in the Army. Growing up, deployment was not an abstract policy debate—it was our household reality. Iraq. Afghanistan. Each deployment brought a quiet fear that settled into everyday life. Each return carried relief, alongside the understanding that something had shifted. The military does not enlist only one person; it pulls entire families into its orbit. That reality is rarely acknowledged, and almost never disclosed to the young people later targeted for recruitment.

The U.S. funding of Israel’s war in Gaza has given students across the country a reason to question the presence of military programs in their high schools.

Many do not want to participate in a service that they believe is tied to a government complicit in “ethnic cleansing” and that has caused the deaths of many innocents, including non-combative women and children.

The National Network Opposing the Militarization of Youth (NNOMY) is providing a packet of resources to inform those who wish to act against military programs that serve the purpose of military recruitment in schools.

One of the main purposes for using these games is not only to maximize the killing potency of soldiers but to also train them in not seeing the masses of people they are killing as as humans but just as targets – a key part of de-humanization of the people in countries the U.S. is invading and bombing all around the world.

Playing video games has become a popular activity for people of all ages. Video gaming is a multibillion-dollar industry bringing in more money than movies and DVDs. On average, girls spend more than an hour per day playing video games and boys spend more than two hours. Teens often spend even more time than younger children. Video games have become very sophisticated and realistic. Some games connect to the internet, which can allow children and adolescents to play games and have discussions with unknown adults and peers.

While some games have educational content, many of the most popular games emphasize negative themes and promote:

The killing of people or animals
The use and abuse of drugs and alcohol
Criminal behavior, disrespect for authority and the law
Sexual exploitation and violence toward women
Racial, sexual, and gender stereotypes
Foul language and obscene gestures

Store-bought video games are evaluated by the Electronic Software Ratings Board (ESRB) and rated for their appropriateness for children and teens. The ratings are featured prominently on the game packaging.

Studies of children exposed to violent media have shown that they may become numb to violence, imitate the violence, and show more aggressive behavior. Younger children and those with emotional, behavioral or learning problems may be more influenced by violent images. -

Video gaming (playing video games) has become a popular activity for people of all ages.
