🌊ACTION ALERT!

The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW), a 1.1-million-acre protected landscape within the Superior National Forest of northeastern Minnesota, is the most visited wilderness area in the United States and a vital ecological and economic resource, generating significant outdoor recreation opportunities and contributing substantially to the regional economy.

Current efforts to overturn the U.S. Forest Service’s 2023 mineral withdrawal and allow sulfide-ore copper mining within the BWCAW watershed—through an unprecedented use of the Congressional Review Act—pose serious risks to its pristine waters, long-standing public land protections, and the communities that depend on them.

The resolution now moves to the U.S. Senate, and we must continue to apply pressure. It is critical that Senators hear loud and clear: HANDS OFF the Boundary Waters.

An update - the threats to America's public lands in the reconciliation bill has not passed, but we are not done yet! Urge your Senators TODAY to continue to protect access to OUR public lands. Strongly encourage them to reject any language that mandates sale or disposal of any public lands. Even if you've already contacted your members of Congress don't let up and keep those emails and phone calls coming. Together we can keep public lands in public hands!

Agricultural runoff that harms fish and wildlife has long been a concern for hunters, anglers and conservationists. Water streaming off farmlands can contain excess nutrients, pesticides and antibiotics. Evidence has been mounting that one type of nutrient in the runoff – nitrates – increases the risk of cancer in humans.

That nitrate runoff is peaking right now, in an annual event called the "spring flush." Learn more about what that's doing to your drinking water and your health, in our "Outdoor America" magazine: https://www.iwla.org/publications/outdoor-america/articles/outdoor-america-2021-issue-1/the-cancer-risk-of-nitrate-pollution

Way back in 1932, the Izaak Walton League resolved to take concrete action on declining wildlife populations: our members decided to create an annual migratory bird stamp as a means of raising funds for waterfowl sanctuaries. One of our members, Jay "Ding" Darling, created the artwork for that stamp. In 1934 - 91 years ago today - Congress passed a law based on the League's proposal.

Since then, Duck Stamps, which still exist today, have raised enough money to protect more than eight million acres of wetland habitat.

At the Izaak Walton League, we create ideas that last - and that make a difference!
