Q: A lot of people say that abortion is essential healthcare. That’s been a major narrative in the media, coming from other doctors. Why don’t you agree with that assessment? Why don’t you believe that abortion is essential healthcare?
“Abortion is actually not healthcare at all. It’s not caring for the mother’s health, nor is it caring for the fetus, the baby’s health.
There is the risk of uterine damage. The internal wall of the uterus is sensitive. Abortion, whether it’s medical or surgical, can cause uterine damage, leading to infertility in the future, or menstrual problems sometimes requiring additional surgery.
Preterm birth. There’s a 36% increase risk of preterm birth in the future in moms who’ve had one abortion.
And then mental health issues, psychological issues. There’s an 81% increased risk of having a lifetime chronic mental health condition after having had one abortion, like depression, anxiety.
We know that carrying a pregnancy to term is protective for women. They have a decreased risk of breast cancer if they carry a pregnancy to term. And in fact we know statistically for women that even if they choose adoption for their baby, they do mentally, psychologically better, than those who choose abortion."
