An Update on the 2026 Northcentral Regional ATV Trail
Dear Northcentral Regional ATV Trail User,
The 2026 riding season is nearly here, and we are excited to share some important updates about the Northcentral Regional ATV Trail.
The trail started as a small pilot project in 2021 with 154 miles. Since then, it has quickly become one of Pennsylvania’s premier outdoor recreation destinations. For the 2026 season, the trail system will be almost 1,000 miles long.
This year, we are adding 94 more miles, mostly in Tioga County. These new miles will help riders travel farther and stay on legal, connected routes in the Pennsylvania Wilds region. More than 250 miles of township roads are also part of the system. These towns voluntarily opened their roads, and their support is essential to the trail's success.
The trail's growth shows how popular ATV riding has become. There are now more than 291,000 ATVs registered in the Commonwealth. Pennsylvania riders are clearly eager for well-managed, high-quality trail experiences.
To keep the trail system safe, well-maintained, and financially sustainable, DCNR is making a small change to permit fees in 2026. Pennsylvania residents will pay $70 per year, and nonresidents will pay $100. Permits prices will now be based on the rider’s home address, not where the ATV is registered.
These fees help pay for:
• Township reimbursements for dust control
• Road and trail maintenance
• Sanitation services
• Signs
• Making and mailing permits
This moderate fee increase will keep the trail in good shape and support the rural communities that make the Pennsylvania Wilds such a special place to explore.
Permits for the 2026 season will be available in early April.
