Everyone deserves a safe place to call home. 💙

This past Saturday marked the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, with this year’s theme, “Safe Homes for All.”

Here in Westchester County, that mission is part of our everyday work. Meet Jalik Folson, a Housing Outreach Worker at CHOICE of NY, as he explains what outreach looks like in our community.

Through our Homeless Outreach program, we help people navigate the steps toward stable housing—from gathering documents and applying for benefits to connecting with services and attending appointments.

It starts with listening, building trust and continuing to show up. Finding housing can be a long process, and having someone alongside you matters.

Meet Tamoya, our HOW Program Supervisor, representing CHOICE of NY in her CHOICE T-shirt—with our locations listed on the back! 💙 Pictured in her White Plains office, she’s one of the team members we’re celebrating this National Case Management Week.

HOW stands for Homeless Outreach Workers. As supervisor, Tamoya helps guide the team supporting people experiencing homelessness as they work toward safe, stable housing.

That work includes gathering documents for supportive housing applications, helping people access benefits, and assisting with essential appointments. It also means staying connected when housing options are limited and the process takes time.

For someone navigating homelessness, having a trusted person explain the next step, follow up, and keep showing up can make a meaningful difference.

This National Case Management Week, October 11–17, we’re celebrating our amazing case managers and the entire CHOICE of NY team!

From helping someone navigate services to following up and making sure they feel heard, our staff bring compassion, dedication, and persistence to their work every day. We’re grateful for the people who show up for our communities—and for one another.

A healthier community starts with making support accessible. 💙

Mount Vernon Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard shares why community health events matter during last month’s Community Health & Resource Fair at Hartley Park, organized by CHOICE of New York’s Pretrial Services team.

On August 19, neighbors came together to connect with health services, community resources, free food and clothing, and activities for the whole family.

Thank you, Mayor Patterson-Howard, for joining us and recognizing the importance of bringing these resources directly to our community—and to our staff, volunteers and partners who made the day possible!

Major cheat code for life: You can be figuring out your own life and still make someone else’s a little easier. 💙

That spirit brought us together at CHOICE of NY’s Pretrial Community Health and Wellness event on August 19 at Hartley Park in Mount Vernon. Staff, providers, and neighbors came together to connect, share resources, and make support easier to find. The amazing DJ—PRIMOVELLI—got everyone moving & grooving!

These sweet moments remind us that showing up matters. Taking time to listen, answering a question, or helping someone find the right resource can mean more than we realize.

Thank you to our Pretrial team, community partners, and everyone who helped make the day possible. You don’t need to have everything figured out to offer a little kindness along the way.

When someone may be overdosing, don’t let uncertainty stop you from acting.

For International Overdose Awareness Day, our CHOICE of New York team in Peekskill is sharing a lifesaving reminder: if you suspect an overdose—even if you aren’t sure whether he**in, fentanyl or another opioid is involved—administer Narcan if you have it and call 911.

Naloxone, commonly known as Narcan, will not harm someone if opioids are not involved. But if they are, it can restore breathing and save that person’s life.

A recent New York State Department of Health study estimated that naloxone saved more than 6,500 lives across New York between April 2023 and March 2025.

Carry Narcan. Make sure the people around you know where it is. If you administer it, stay with the person, place them on their side and follow the 911 dispatcher’s instructions until help arrives.

CHOICE of New York offers Narcan training and kits at our locations. Having Narcan with you could mean being ready when someone needs it most.

“It seems like the more I give, the more I get. And that is the way it’s supposed to go in life.”—Dolly Parton

Today, we remember Dolly Parton—not only as an incomparable entertainer, but as a woman whose generosity transformed lives.

That spirit was beautifully reflected at last week’s CHOICE Pretrial Community Services Community Health Fair in Mount Vernon. Neighbors came together to enjoy free food, clothing, books, vital resources, music from our DJ, dancing, games, and so much more—all offered in the spirit of community and care.

The books distributed that day feel especially meaningful as we honor Dolly. Inspired by her father’s inability to read and write, she founded the Imagination Library to place free books in the hands of young children and help their dreams take root.

Following the heartbreaking news that Dolly died after a brief battle with cancer, we celebrate the extraordinary legacy she leaves behind. May we continue honoring her by giving generously, supporting our neighbors, and ensuring that every person feels seen, valued, and empowered.

Rest in peace, Dolly Parton.

Community, connection, resources and a whole lot of fun at Hartley Park! 💚

What an incredible turnout for our Community Health & Resource Fair in Mount Vernon!

It was wonderful to see the park filled with neighbors connecting with organizations and resources, kids playing games, people dancing to the music, families enjoying the day together, and community members picking up free food, clothing and other essentials.

A very special thank you to our CHOICE Pretrial Services team, the CHOICE Workforce Program and all of the incredible volunteers who put so much time and energy into making the day possible. We couldn’t have done it without you!

Thank you as well to DJ Primovelli for keeping the music and energy going, every vendor and community organization that set up shop, our event partners and affiliates, and everyone who came ready to share information, services and support with the Mount Vernon community.

We were also so glad to welcome Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard to the fair and have her join us for such a special day of community connection.

And, of course, thank you to every person and family who stopped by, danced, played, explored the tables, grabbed a bite to eat, found a new resource or simply spent some time with their neighbors.

This is what community looks like. 💚
