New wildlife research is providing useful direction for mule deer habitat work, wildlife-water projects and drought planning across the West.
HABITAT RESTORATION IS WORKING—BUT FOLLOW-UP MATTERS
A new Utah study tracked 593 female mule deer. During winter, deer remained longer in restored sagebrush areas and locations where encroaching piñon-juniper had been removed.
Summer use was strongest two to four years after treatment, but benefits generally weakened after five years.
What this may mean on the ground: Piñon-juniper removal and sagebrush restoration can improve mule deer habitat, but projects should preserve a healthy mixture of forage, shrubs, trees and escape cover. Follow-up inspections and maintenance should be planned at approximately three and five years.
Evidence strength: Moderate to strong for increased deer use, but the study did not prove increased survival or fawn recruitment.

GUZZLERS BECOME MORE IMPORTANT AFTER WILDFIRE
Researchers monitored seven wildlife-water developments for two years before and two years after a large Utah wildfire.
Guzzler visits increased among both male and female mule deer after the fire. Female use remained elevated through the following two summers, while male use was greatest during the rut.
What this may mean on the ground: Wildlife waters located within major burn areas should be inspected, repaired and filled quickly—and treated as elevated priorities for at least two years following the fire.
Evidence strength: Moderate. Researchers documented 5,297 mule deer visits, but the study involved one population and measured water use rather than survival or reproduction.

DESERT WILDLIFE MAY NEED WATER YEAR-ROUND DURING DROUGHT
A Mojave Desert study equipped 43 desert bighorn sheep with internal temperature monitors during severe drought. Every population used surface water throughout the year—not just during summer.
Animals in hotter, lower-elevation country drank regularly during winter, while summer use reached approximately 13 to 21 days per month.
What this may mean on the ground: Low-desert catchments should not automatically be considered seasonal resources. During drought, year-round dependability may be important. However, water alone cannot overcome poor forage quality or a serious energy shortage.
Evidence strength: Moderate. The monitoring was excellent, but the study involved bighorn sheep during one drought year. Applying the results directly to mule deer requires caution.

SEVERE DROUGHT AFFECTS THE ENTIRE PREDATOR-PREY SYSTEM
Researchers analyzed 12 years of information from 2,854 mule deer, 105 mountain lions and 103 black bears across Utah and Nevada.
Between the wettest and driest conditions, highly selected habitat declined approximately:
• 10% for mule deer
• 14% for black bears
• 18% for mountain lions
Mule deer fawn recruitment declined by more than 34% under extreme drought, with a sharp reduction once drought became more severe than moderate.
What this may mean on the ground: Water hauling alone may not correct drought-related recruitment problems. Productive shrub communities, fawning cover, thermal refuge, escape cover and dependable water must be protected together.
The research also cautions against automatically blaming low fawn recruitment entirely on predators. Severe drought can reduce deer recruitment while simultaneously shrinking suitable predator habitat.
Evidence strength: Strong regional observational evidence, although researchers did not directly measure predator reproduction or population changes.
