Runamuk Acres Conservation Farm

Runamuk Acres Conservation Farm Runamuk Acres is a Maine conservation farm. Most of our acreage is protected for wildlife under a lifetime conservation contract.

The rest produces REAL food for the local community: vegetables, lamb, and agricultural writings by Samantha Burns.

Putting this out there on the off chance someone in the community has a second-hand car they are selling.

We've lost our wheels over here and need to replace them ASAP. BraeTek has only just started saving, so we have a small down-payment available. And he can make monthly payments until the balance is paid off.

If you, or someone you know, are in a position to be able to work with us in this we are reliable and hardworking people. Not looking for a hand-out, just a hand UP.šŸ™

End of May garden update!

I think I'm gaining, lol. Lots of onions, scallions, carrots, and radishes planted. 17 varieties of winter squash and pumpkins.

The rest is waiting till after the Blue Moon tonight, and then I'll hit it hard! You won't believe how fast things will grow over the next few weeks.

Stay tuned, my friends!

We did it! 🄳 We hit our fundraising goal—and that means construction can actually, really happen this week!

Farming is hard. Farming as a single lady-farmer trying to build something in conservation of all things? That takes a village—and over the years, Runamuk’s community (both online and irl) has been mine, again and again.

This farm is still growing because of the people who have shown up—upgrading, donating, grabbing a farm share—every time this farm has needed it. So thank you. Truly. I couldn't do this without you. šŸ™

Yesterday I planted 17 varieties of winter squashes and (mostly) eating pumpkins! Storage crops are my absolute favorite to grow, but especially winter squashes. Buttercup, butternut, winter sweet, and indigenous varieties like the Seneca and Seminole, acorn squash and the classic Blue Hubbard.

It's tradition to grow a few carving pumpkins for the children of households participating in Runamuk's CSA program, and I planted two beds of them. Plus, a first-time experiment with the GIANT pumpkin! Can't wait to see how big I can grow it!

Lots of crops going in this weekend. I'm expecting to begin taking the first harvests mid-June, so stay tuned for news of the farmstand opening for the season! Just 4 spots left in our 2026 CSA farm-share program--sign-up link in comments.

With love from your friendly neighborhood farmer,
~Sam

FLASH SALE THIS WEEK ONLY!
Yesterday afternoon found me on my knees inside the sheep-tractor digging a winter’s worth of ā€œmuckā€ away from the skids so we could drag it out and bring it into action for the season.

Let’s just say it was a little ā€œrankā€.

The sheep-tractor is 7 this season. SHe’s got some more life left, but desperately needs a new roof—which is part of the reason I was on my knees. The plywood roof sags dramatically and I didn’t want to gouge my back on the sharp screws coming through.

Meanwhile, the rams have been spending their summers in a repurposed truck cap and that’s seen better days too. The boys have busted out the plexiglass windows and the walls are starting to rot. Not to mention the thing is just hot in August.

These portable shelters are how I move my flock across the 13 acres I farm here—rotating them so the pasture stays healthy and productive. Without them, the whole system breaks down.

I’ve priced out the lumber and need about $500. To raise the funds I’m running a flash sale this week on farm-shares and annual subscriptions.

Be sure to check out the video at the end to see me moving the girls from one spot to another. It’s quite a feat!

Seven years of hard use. One sheep tractor needs a new roof. The other needs replacing. Flash sale this week—help me buy the lumber.

James Murphy came into my life in 2015, a year-old shelter dog with the most gentlemanly manners I've ever seen in a dog. He'd push his head under your hand without being asked. He'd plant himself between you and whatever came up the driveway. He chased foxes off the chicken coop with all the gusto his breed is built for.

He was my best friend for eleven years.

This week, his body finally gave out. We sat on the low couch at the vet's eating Cape Cod salt-and-vinegar chips—his favorite—and a bar of Madagascar chocolate my sister brought up because she believes every dog should get to eat chocolate at least once in his life. I stroked the soft place behind his ear, told him I loved him...and then it was over.

I dug the hole myself. Carried him the length of the garden myself. Laid him down beside a nannyberry tree I moved there this spring, like I'd known what ut was for.

In a few years the tree will fruit. The birds will come for the berries in late summer, and some part of my best friend will continue on.

A good dog should get a good ending. I'm glad I could give Murphy one.
