Two U.S. Senators are demanding answers from major seafood certification programs after evidence showed that foreign shrimp processors holding widely recognized certifications continue to ship products refused by the FDA for food safety violations.

Recent FDA refusal data found that more than 86% of shrimp entry lines refused for banned antibiotics in the first four months of 2026 originated from processors certified under the Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) program.

Now, U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA) and Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) are asking certification bodies about what accountability measures are in place.

Consumers deserve confidence that seafood labels reflect real food safety standards—not just marketing claims.

🎉 Happy Birthday, Sal Versaggi! 🎉
Today, we celebrate not only another year of life, but a lifetime of dedication to the American shrimp industry.
Sal Versaggi has been part of the Southern Shrimp Alliance since the very beginning — a founding member who has served on the Board since SSA’s inception. As a former president of the Southeastern Fisheries Association, Sal recognized early on the need to unite shrimp fishermen and processors across the Southeast to create a strong voice for our industry in Washington, D.C. His vision helped lay the foundation for what SSA is today.
A third-generation shrimper and president of Versaggi Shrimp Corp. — a family business founded in 1912 in St. Augustine, Florida — Sal has spent his life helping build and strengthen the American shrimp industry.
As Sal retires from the Southern Shrimp Alliance Board, we want to extend our deepest gratitude for his many years of service, leadership, knowledge, and expertise. His commitment to fighting for shrimpers and helping guide SSA’s mission has made a lasting impact on our industry and organization.
Thank you, Sal, for your years of volunteer leadership and dedication to protecting the future of U.S. shrimp. Your legacy will continue to shape this industry for generations to come.
❤️ Happy Birthday, and thank you for everything.
