Mud Run Watershed

Mud Run Watershed The Mud Run Watershed is located in and around the village of Tuscarawas and Wainwright. It is 7.8 mi. long and has a drainage area of 9.9 square mi.

The Mud Run Watershed, located in Warwick Township just south of New Philadelphia, is polluted as a result of extensive historical unregulated coal mining in the area. The Mud Run Watershed’s stream travels 7.8 miles and has a drainage area of nearly 10 miles. The water is orange as a result of the iron in the water from acid mine drainage. The Mud Run Watershed Stream Keepers are a program of Rural Action, and is dedicated to restoring the watershed and educating the community.

Rainy weather did not keep our scouts and volunteers from participating in our Second Annual River Sweep Event on Saturday. Rural Action event coordinator Rebeka Marquart, and Matt Majkszak from Athens Ohio Rural Action Watershed program, organized the volunteers and provided materials needed to safely handle trash removal. The crew removed 142 pounds of trash and 223 pounds of Garlic Mustard, which is a highly invasive species, around our trails along the river. Nancy Schoenbaum and her cooks provided Trash Can Stew plus giant cookie slices and lots of ice cream! Sean Harris provided transportation to and from the river trail and he hauled the trash bags back to camp. Thank you to everyone who made this a very successful event!

This past Saturday and Sunday were Camp Tuscazoar's Maple Days! We ended up diverting *half* of the waste produced that weekend from the landfill, either via recycling or composting. This is a bag where all of the waste was good to go for composting.
