The Internet provides one of the purest forms of democracy today, allowing students to access an endless supply of information, for relatively little money and with great ease. When those valuable avenues for education and communication are undermined by opponents of freedom of expression and privacy, the Student Net Alliance (SNA) is ready to mobilize students worldwide to defend the internet as
a tool for everyone to use with equal caliber. At its heart, the Student Net Alliance is a student-run digital rights organization that combines new digital tools with impactful political organizing tactics. To amplify the student voice, we build apps for civic engagement and public debate that allow our network of activists to self-organize around issues affecting their communities. As a testament to the value of equal Internet access for all, the Student Net Alliance’s organizational structure is modeled after the Internet itself – a dynamic and participatory democracy of citizens and networks, rather than a pyramidal, top-down hierarchy. Since October 2013, we have organized our members around digital calls-to-action and hosted the first Create a Better University hackathon to strengthen our developer community.
