General information
Save Our Circle was formed the day Mayor Mitch Landrieu announced his intent to remove the Robert E. Lee monument from its prominent spot in Lee Circle. We believe that not only is this action by the mayor an attempt to “hide” history from plain site, but a divisive move that will and has already divided the entire community. But most importantly, the mayor’s focus should be on more pressing issues affecting the city. On the same day he made his intentions clear at the New Orleans City Council meeting, the city reached its 100th murder. Shouldn’t the “monumental” expenses to relocate, rename, or remove any of these monuments or street names, or any symbol deemed offensive, be spent more effectively? Crime prevention, education, and our first responders are all in desperate need of our and the mayors full attention. Although Save Our Circle began as an opposition to the removal of Lee Circle, it has grown to encompass all historic monuments, statues, and street names in the great City of New Orleans. The Circle now stands for the circle of our common beliefs and values. We are petitioning the mayor to cease and desist all talks to relocate, rename, or remove these monuments. Some which are registered on the National Historic Registry. These men were also American Soldiers and in being so are deemed American War Veterans and the monuments should be protected. We are not affiliated with nor do we support or promote the boycotting of the City of New Orleans or any other group that advertises similar goals. We are an organized group of volunteers that care deeply about the culture and history of New Orleans and seek to preserve that history through the following techniques: 1) Gather as vast number of signatures via our online petition at www.saveourcircle.com 2) Voice our beliefs and values throughout social media. 3) Gain media attention through interviews, articles, blogs, etc… 4) Organize and participate in rallies to gain awareness for our campaign. 5) Attend all City Council meetings pertaining to the monuments project. 6) Execute an email/phone call blitz to contact any and all parties that may have an influence in this matter. Including but not exclusive to, the Mayor, the City Council, National Registry, Parks and Recreations, the Governor and Lt. Governor, Congressmen, Senators, and other public officials. 7) Seek legal recourse i necessary to subvert the mayors’ plan. Including laws pertaining to historic properties, debunking the nuisance code invoked by the mayor, and the Heritage Act. 8) Exercise our right as voters in the next election. We are a respectful yet vigilant group of citizens with a united vision in preserving the greatest city in the world; New Orleans. We wish to walk along side of the mayor and build our future together.
