Common Ground Relief

Common Ground Relief CGR fosters environmental and community stewardship in Southeast Louisiana. Since 2005.

Common Ground Relief's mission is to create resilient Gulf Coast communities that are environmentally sustainable, financially viable and personally cohesive. Common Ground Relief was established in September 2005 to provide disaster relief in the Greater New Orleans area following Hurricane Katrina. With its origins as a community-initiated, volunteer organization that offered assistance, mutual

aid and support, this work gave hope to local communities by working with them, providing for their immediate needs and emphasizes people working together to rebuild their lives in sustainable ways. In these initial years, Common Ground Relief focused its efforts where it was needed most – providing housing, health, clothing, pro bono legal services, and other core needs to the residents of New Orleans. In late 2007, as the world-wide recession worsened and the rebuilding of houses commenced, Common Ground Relief partnered with a local general contractor to build affordable, energy efficient housing through the State of Louisiana’s Road Home program. Common Ground Relief ended the use of large numbers of volunteers in order to create employment and job training opportunities for residents displaced by hurricanes Katrina and Rita. A series of Section 3 Small Businesses were created to accomplish this goal. An elevated model house, with a stormwater filtration system using native plant material, was built at 1804 Deslonde Street in the Lower Ninth Ward. 1804 Deslonde Street now houses volunteers working on our wetlands restoration projects. In late 2008, the Anita Roddick Advocacy Center was created to provide community services and house volunteers at 1800 Deslonde Street in the Lower Ninth Ward. In 2013, Common Ground Relief’s leadership revised the mission statement to reflect a forward-looking focus – “to create resilient Gulf Coast communities that are environmentally sustainable, financially viable and personally cohesive.” While the mission and organization have evolved, Common Ground Relief remains committed to its grassroots, volunteer-based approach to community transformation and sustainability. In 2015, Common Ground Relief leadership determined that the most effective way of achieving the organization’s mission was to focus squarely on restoring and preserving Louisiana’s disappearing coastal wetlands. Common Ground Relief’s achievements:
- Created 9 food/water, tool lending and clothing distribution centers in 7 of Louisiana’s southern parishes
- Established the Common Ground Health Clinic with seven mobile clinics *
- Established the Common Ground Free Legal Clinic *
- Established a women’s and family shelter *
- Built neighborhood computer centers and offered free tech support to local non-profits
- Gutted 3,000 houses, businesses, churches and schools in the Ninth Ward
- Provided bioremediation services for mold and soil toxin removal
- Engaged over 65,000 volunteers in post-disaster recovery
- Contributed an estimated value of volunteer labor in excess of $40 million
- Established the state-licensed Native Plant Nursery and Cabane Coypu Environmental Learning Center
- Partners with colleges and universities, from across the country, for environmental volunteer projects
- Plants approximately 5,000 bottomland hardwood trees per year and more then 16,000 plugs of marsh grass per year
- Provides hands-on environmental curriculum to local K-12 students

* The Common Ground Health Clinic is now a 501c3 non profit operating in Algiers. The shelters are now operating as the New Orleans Women’s & Children’s Shelter and the Common Ground Legal Clinic is now affiliated with The Louisiana Civil Justice Center.

Thanks to the generous support of the Collins C Diboll Foundation, CGR is excited to announce an RFQ for local artists opening May 15th!

This opportunity will grant one finalist the opportunity to paint a 30 foot by 6 foot mural on the new fence that surround's CGR's located at the foot of the Claiborne Bridge in the Lower 9th Ward.

Seen by thousands of commuters daily, hundreds of visitors annually, and dozens of surrounding neighbors-this piece is intended to educate, inspire, and welcome learners of all ages into the Native Plant Nursery.

After applications close 3 semi-finalists will be asked to submit a site-specific design proposal, compensated at $250 per finalist, by July 1st.

We will ask our shoppers to vote on their favorite design over the course of two weeks in July.

The winner will be granted $8,500 to complete this work by September 30 of this year. This includes all supplies and materials needed for the project. The treated pine fence is currently painted with one layer of primer.

Hello again! Let's reintroduce our Free Pantry program. What started as a mobile, contact-less pantry serving 25 families per week in 2020 has evolved over the past 6 years through the sustained efforts of our staff, volunteers, funders, and donors.

Today we serve upwards of 120+ households each week! That's around 400 individuals, 40% of whom are children under 18.

We don't ID, require registration, or limit the number of times folks can receive food per month.

We are located at 1804 Deslonde St, open on Saturdays from 10 am-1 pm, and are first-come first-served.

We focus on sharing fresh produce alongside rice, beans, and bread. Local donors like and more supplement our shelves with amazing goods like baguettes, pastries, and fresh leafy greens.

You can support the pantry today for the betterment of our community's health by sponsoring a food drive, fundraiser, or come in person to volunteer with us!

We've got okra! This past Saturday we tried something new at the Free Pantry by offering about 60 okra starts to our Pantry shoppers alongside the fresh produce we regularly offer.

It was a hit! We'll have more okra AND butternut squash available this coming Saturday.

These veggie starts are coming from our own Native Plant Nursery's greenhouse. Recently completed in January of this year, our greenhouse is transforming our growing capacity by opening up new possibilities for both our Coastal Restoration program and the Free Pantry.

These okra came from our staff's personal seed collections, the soil from our tree supplies, and these old pots we just had laying around. As we explore this new growing space within the Native Plant Nursery, we wonder, dream, and expand our programming.

While we focus on growing trees to reforest the wetlands surrounding New Orleans each year, some of which provide edible fruits and nuts, we are striving to fold in additional pollinator and garden plants better suited for urban growing spaces.

Please excuse us as we continue to experiment, play, and share food.
