Our West Bank adult literacy learners are L O V I N G this year's One Book One New Orleans selection, Skye Jackson's Libre. They are connecting with the poems in so many ways, getting extra excited when they come across insider info that only a New Orleans resident would know. We can't wait to see what they write as they explore their own notions of ✨freedom ✨!

Every week, Ike shows up to our literacy classes right after work — and on Fridays, he stays even longer for extra speaking practice. That kind of dedication says everything about who he is.

Ike's journey with YMCA Education Services has been about more than literacy skills. He met his future wife right here in our learning center, and today he's a devoted parent and partner. He even laces up to run in our annual 5K fundraiser each year!

We're so proud of Ike's progress and the heart he brings to our program every single day. 💪📚

Happy retirement to our beloved Mary Popp! 🎉 Her dedication changed the lives of so many students, as we heard in the surprise speeches from her class. 💐“When I met Ms. Mary, I didn’t understand math. She broke it down for me to understand, and now I love math.”
💐“She taught me how to understand vowels, different forms of talking about what I know. She’s one of best teachers I’ve ever had.” We love you, Mary!

Did you know?
42% of adults in Louisiana have low reading, writing, or math skills. But here's the good news: that's exactly why YMCA Education Services exists.

We offer FREE classes to help close that gap, no matter where someone is starting from. GED, HiSET, adult literacy, ESL, and online options are available across the New Orleans area.
