Loyola New Orleans National Lawyers Guild

Loyola New Orleans National Lawyers Guild The National Lawyers Guild advocates using the law to protect human rights and to attain social justice.

The NLG is dedicated to the need for basic change in the structure of our political and economic system. We seek to unite the lawyers, law students, legal workers and jailhouse lawyers to function as an effective force in the service of the people, to the end that human rights shall be regarded as more sacred than property interests. Our aim is to bring together all those who recognize the importa

nce of safeguarding and extending the rights of workers, women, LGBTQ people, farmers, people with disabilities and people of color, upon whom the welfare of the entire nation depends; who seek actively to eliminate racism; who work to maintain and protect our civil rights and liberties in the face of persistent attacks upon them; and who look upon the law as an instrument for the protection of the people, rather than for their repression. We, in collaboration with the Promise of Justice Initiative (PJI), Innocence & Justice Louisiana (IJL), and The Juror Project, hosted a panel discussion last Wednesday about Brady violations, its legacy and its impact, particularly in Louisiana.

Almost 63 years ago, in Brady v. Maryland (1963), the Supreme Court of the United States held that prosecutors violate a defendant’s due process when they withhold evidence favorable to the defendant, material to guilt or punishment.

The state of Louisiana is a leader in not only incarceration but wrongful incarceration due to withheld evidence in criminal cases. Learn more + take action: https://promiseofjustice.org/legal-advocacy. 💚
