42 years ago this summer, the Louisiana World Exposition (LWE) opened in New Orleans’ Warehouse District! This fair, while not as successful financially as initially hoped, spurred a period of development that is still impacting us today.

In addition to a renewed interest in historic warehouses, the fair shifted the view of New Orleans’ riverfront as an industrial area into one to be enjoyed for cultural and recreational use. This led to the redevelopment of a number of industrial buildings into residential homes for thousands, including the Cotton Mill, Federal Fibre Mills, and Woodward Wight Lofts.

Although most of the whimsical temporary structures built for the fair were demolished afterwards, several physical reminders still remain today. One of the fair’s famous M.A.R.T. (Mississippi Aerial River Transit) gondola cabins — once transporting visitors high above the river — now sits in front of Nesbit’s Poeyfarre Street Market!

✨ Tomorrow, step inside one of New Orleans' hidden Mid-Century Modern gems.

Built in 1964, this custom contemporary home caught Drayton and Leslie Holley's attention with its skylights, one-story layout, oak-lined surroundings, and effortless livability. Today, they describe it as feeling "more like a resort"—and it's easy to see why.

The home is filled with the features Mid-Century Modern enthusiasts love: natural light, clean lines, seamless indoor-outdoor living, and thoughtful design that still feels fresh more than 60 years later. It even has a hidden safe tucked into an air-conditioning return.

This remarkable residence is one of three private homes featured on the PRC's 2026 MidMod Home Tour & Happy Hour tomorrow, June 17, from 5–8 p.m.

WHEN YOU KNOW, YOU KNOW.

After touring what she estimates were nearly 70 houses, Suzanne Moak pulled into the driveway of this 1960 Mid-Century Modern home designed by Arthur Q. Davis and immediately felt she had found the one.

"The abundance of windows, the deep green from the oak tree, it just felt so right. I felt relieved," she recalls.

Set on a broad, oak-shaded lot in Lakewood North, this remarkable home embraces everything Mid-Century Modern enthusiasts love: soaring ceilings, walls of glass, seamless connections to the outdoors, and a floor plan designed around light, space, and nature.

Since purchasing the home in 2021, Moak has filled it with contemporary art, vibrant color, and her own creative spirit, transforming it into a home that feels both timeless and distinctly New Orleans.

Have you heard about the Louisiana Fortify Homes Program lottery?

Orleans Parish homeowners may be able to register for up to $10,000 toward a fortified roof — a roof built to better withstand hurricane-force winds and severe weather.

A few important things to know:
Historic homes can often qualify.
The deadline to register is June 19 at 5 p.m. Homeowners should register before beginning any fortified roof work.

This is especially important for New Orleans, where stronger roofs can help protect homes, reduce storm damage, and support long-term housing stability.
