What started as a little real estate browsing turned into a forever home. ✨

Three years ago, Curtis Herring wasn't looking to move. Then he stumbled across a 1962 Mid-Century Modern gem designed by architect Leonard Dreyfus—a home with soaring ceilings, terrazzo floors, a sleek brick façade, and an original swimming pool that felt like a permanent vacation.

While others saw musty carpet and dated finishes, Herring saw possibility. Today, the home is a stunning reflection of Mid-Century design, filled with iconic furnishings, thoughtful updates, and personal touches that honor its original character.

"It feels like it was meant to be," Herring says. "I feel like I have always been here."

Good news: Ted’s Frostop will not be demolished under the current proposal.

The developer has withdrawn its appeal of the Historic District Landmarks Commission’s demolition denial, meaning the HDLC’s April decision stands. Frostop will not be heard at the June 4 City Council meeting.

This is major progress, and it happened because neighbors, patrons, preservation advocates and architecture lovers showed up.

But the long-term future of the 1955 building, the restaurant and the larger development site remains uncertain. The developers still own three additional properties on the block, Tulane has paused its potential involvement in the student housing plan, and no revised plan has been made public.

Ted’s Frostop is one of New Orleans’ rare examples of midcentury roadside architecture with Googie-style influences. It is quirky, bright, joyful and deeply tied to the character of South Claiborne Avenue.

PRC will continue to monitor the site and advocate for a creative path forward that keeps Frostop standing.

Ted’s Frostop is safe from demolition under the current proposal.
RCR Claiborne Venture III LLC has withdrawn its appeal of the Historic District Landmarks Commission’s April 8 decision denying demolition of the beloved 1955 diner. The New Orleans City Council had been scheduled to consider the appeal on June 4.

This is a major step in the right direction, but Frostop’s long-term future remains uncertain. PRC will continue to monitor the site and advocate for a creative path forward that preserves the building, the business, the signage and the public memory attached to this rare piece of New Orleans’ midcentury roadside architecture.

Hurricane season is here, and Louisiana's expanded Fortify Homes Program could help thousands of homeowners strengthen their roofs before the next storm.

But for many homeowners, receiving a grant is only part of the journey.

In a statement released today, PRCNO highlights why gap funding is critical to helping eligible Orleans Parish homeowners move from a grant award to a completed FORTIFIED roof—and how our Revival Grants program can help bridge that gap.
